Cavern and cave diving: what is the difference

6 分で読めます16 ソース確認済み 2026-10-14

Cavern diving stays in the daylight-lit entrance area of a cave; cave diving goes beyond it. Agencies define the boundary differently, and all agree that cavern training does not qualify a diver for the cave beyond.

Reading this article is no substitute for supervised training with a qualified, currently active instructor. It explains how training agencies draw the line between cavern and cave diving; it is not a guide to doing either.

Two environments under one roof

Both cavern and cave diving take place in an overhead environment, meaning somewhere a diver cannot swim straight up to the surface. The American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS), which publishes standards for scientific diving programmes, uses exactly that test: a team counts as cavern or cave diving if at any point rock prevents a direct, unobstructed ascent [1]. The same manual lists hazards particular to caves: no natural light, currents that change in strength and direction, fine sediment that can remove visibility very quickly, and restrictions, which it describes as passages where two divers cannot easily pass side by side while sharing air [1].

What separates a cavern from a cave, in training terms, is mostly light and distance. The cavern is the entrance region where daylight still reaches and the way out can be seen. Beyond it is the cave proper, where the only light is what the divers carry.

How agencies define the cavern zone

There is no single international definition. Each agency writes its own, and the numbers differ.

  • TDI limits certified cavern divers to 40 m depth and 61 linear metres of penetration from the surface, with gas planned by the rule of thirds (one-sixth when diving doubles), a continuous guideline, and no restrictions or areas too small for two divers side by side [2].
  • RAID defines the cavern zone as the part of the overhead where daylight is the primary light source, allows penetration up to 60 m from the surface, and requires at least 10 m of visibility at the start of the dive [3].
  • SSI keeps cavern students strictly within the daylight zone, with a maximum training depth of 40 m and gas planned by the rule of sixths [4].
  • PADI describes its Cavern Diver specialty as staying within the light zone so that open water can be reached easily; its public page gives no numeric limits [5].
  • IANTD trains cavern divers within the zone of natural light, with maximum depth equal to the diver's previous certification [6].
  • The NSS-CDS single-tank cavern course keeps divers in clear sight of the entrance and daylight [7].
  • In Australia the CDAA rates sites rather than zones. A Cavern site is fresh water no deeper than 20 m, with slight overhangs, near-vertical ascents and daylight always visible, and Basic Cave divers are limited to 40 m of linear penetration at Cavern and Sinkhole sites [8][9].
  • The French federation FFESSM calls the daylight-lit area under a roof Zone 1 and sets separate limits for its Zones 2 and 3 [10].

These definitions are not interchangeable. A distance limit (61 m, 60 m, 40 m) measures something different from a light-based limit, and a 40 m depth limit in one system sits beside a 20 m site rating in another. A diver trained under one agency and diving under another's local rules needs to check which applies. This reference does not treat any two agencies' courses as equivalent.

The line was drawn from accident records

The distinction grew out of accident analysis. In the foreword to Basic Cave Diving: A Blueprint for Survival, Sheck Exley recorded that at least 26 divers died in Florida's underwater caves in 1974, and described the certified cavern courses of his day as covering short distances in large sunlit areas within 130 ft (about 40 m) linear distance of the surface [11]. The NSS Cave Diving Section, which published the book, credits education with bringing annual deaths down to fewer than five [12]. Its current website states that more than 400 divers have died in underwater caves [13].

Exley's analysis named two leading causes in the deaths he studied: not running a single continuous guideline from the entrance, and not keeping enough breathing gas for the exit and for emergencies [11]. Those are the first controls a cavern course introduces.

Why the distinction matters

Cavern training is a limited permission, not the first part of a cave card. TDI states that its Cavern Diver course is not intended to teach cave diving [2]. The NSS-CDS describes its cavern course as a safety and awareness course that is neither a prerequisite for nor a credit toward cave certification [7]. Within the cavern zone, limits on distance, depth and light are meant to keep a diver close enough to daylight that open water remains the obvious way out.

Three things change when a diver leaves the light zone.

  • Light. Once daylight is out of sight, every light source is carried. Equipment lists for cave courses reflect this, typically requiring a primary light and two backups [14][15].
  • Distance. The way out depends on the line and on the gas remaining, rather than on a visible exit.
  • Complexity. Caves branch. Navigation decisions at junctions are introduced only in later courses; GUE's first cave course, for example, excludes jumps, traverses and circuits [15].

The AAUS treats the two separately for scientific divers as well. Cavern authorisation calls for at least four cavern dives, preferably in two different caverns; cave authorisation calls for at least twelve cave dives, preferably at four sites with differing conditions [1].

Local rules sit on top of training

A cavern card is not a site permit. Landowners, park authorities and access bodies set their own requirements. In Australia, for example, the CDAA arranges access to many sites and applies its own site categories [8][16]. Exley himself cautioned that his procedures were written for Florida conditions and that other regions could require quite different ones [11].

In short

A cavern is the daylight-lit entrance region of a cave; a cave is everything beyond it. Agencies agree on the idea but not on the numbers, and they agree that cavern training does not qualify anyone to enter the cave beyond. Anyone interested in either should start by talking to a qualified instructor who is currently active with their agency.
