ZO ČSS 7-02 Hranický kras

Czech Republic Hranický kras, Czech Speleological Society group 7-02 Hranický kras, Základní organizace České speleologické společnosti 7-02 Hranický kras, Hranice Karst caving group

The local group of the Czech Speleological Society that explores, maps and monitors the Hranice Abyss (Hranická propast), the deepest known flooded abyss, under an exemption from Czech nature-protection law.

Website oficial ↗

Group 7-02 Hranický kras of the Czech Speleological Society was founded on 1978-12-22. Its members explore the flooded and dry parts of the Hranice Abyss, which lies in the Hůrka u Hranic National Nature Reserve, and they carry out sampling, mapping and measurements for scientists under an exemption from Czech nature-protection law (Act 114/1992) [1].

The group's site documents the depth history of the abyss: Polish diver Krzysztof Starnawski reached 265 m on 2015-08-21; an ROV reached 404 m on 2016-09-27; and in summer 2022 an underwater robot operated with UNEXMIN GeoRobotics reached 450 m before technical limits stopped it, without finding the bottom [2][3]. The group also runs a monitoring station with temperature and pressure sensors in the abyss and is building a 3D model from plan maps drawn every 3 m of depth [2].
