DAN Europe

International DAN Europe Foundation, Divers Alert Network Europe

The European member of the International Divers Alert Network, founded in 1983, offering members 24-hour diving emergency assistance with diving medical officers, research on diving physiology, first aid education and dive insurance.

Official website ↗

DAN Europe describes itself as a foundation working in diving safety since 1983, with a registered office in Ta'Xbiex, Malta, and a continental operations office in Roseto, Italy [1]. It is one of five independent, separately administered non-profit organisations (DAN America, DAN Europe, DAN Japan, DAN Southern Africa and DAN Asia Pacific) that make up the International Divers Alert Network (IDAN) [1]. Its activities include emergency assistance, research into diving physiology, first aid training and insurance through regulated insurance entities [1].

Its emergency page says members can get assistance anywhere in the world, around the clock, with diving medical officers available in more than 20 languages; it advises anyone in a dangerous or life-threatening situation to call local emergency services or go to the nearest hospital first [2]. A DAN Europe article from 2015 explains why the nearest recompression chamber may not be open or able to treat a diver, and why the injured diver should be medically assessed first [3]. That article lists an emergency number that differs from the one on the current emergency page, a reminder that published numbers change.
