Lake Guinas
A clear, deep sinkhole lake on private farmland near Tsumeb, reached by a 30 m vertical drop. Dived only on arranged expeditions.
Lake Guinas sits about 30 m below ground behind sheer walls; on a 2008 expedition divers and equipment were moved in and out with a winch. The narrow surface pool opens below into a wide hourglass-shaped basin that reaches about 133 m.
The lake is on private land, and visits depend on the landowner's permission. There have been drownings here, and police have described the underwater topography as difficult for searches.
The environment
Clear, warm fresh water (about 26 C in 2008), with living stromatolites and drowned stalactites reported, and the endemic Guinas tilapia.
Conditions
Temperature from a 2008 expedition; no recent measurements found.
