The single entrance to the Stargate fracture cave on South Andros: a rimmed inland blue hole on private land, with a hydrogen sulfide layer below the surface and large decorated passages beyond.

The entrance is a large opening a short walk from the road, with the water a few metres below the rim. Divers descend through fresh water and a hazy hydrogen sulfide layer into a deep shaft, from which a wide crack leads into the North Passage, a large tunnel with flowstone on the walls.

The site is on private land and is dived on organised trips with experienced guides. It is a deep technical cave environment rather than a daylight cavern.

The environment

Deep inland fracture shaft and large tunnels; fresh water over salt water with a hydrogen sulfide layer; flowstone decoration.

Conditions

Hydrogen sulfide layer from about 15 m; trips run by the guiding operator in winter only.

Typical ranges from published sources, not current conditions.
