InDEPTH (2026) reports roughly 19.3 km (12 miles) explored. The guiding operator's website gives 'more than 60,000 feet' of passage for the combined Dan's and Ralph's system (it also prints 12,195 m, which does not match the feet figure), and National Geographic reported nearly seven miles explored by 2010. Figures differ by date and by whether survey or exploration is meant. Kakuk's exploration and mapping is described as spanning roughly 24 m to 60 m. The operator lists the main passage levels as about 24 m, 34 m and 45 m.

A heavily decorated inland underwater cave in the pine forest of south Great Abaco, formed by joining Dan's Cave and Ralph's Cave. It is one of the longest documented island cave systems and is dived only with an approved guide.

Dan's Cave is an inland blue hole on Great Abaco that leads into a long network of flooded passages beneath the island's pine forest. Divers and explorers working in the cave joined it to the neighbouring Ralph's Cave, and the combined network is now usually called Dan's Cave or the Dan's Cave System. Published accounts describe it as one of the longest underwater caves on any island.

The cave is known above all for its mineral decoration. Stalactites, stalagmites, columns and delicate crystal growths fill rooms such as the Cascade Room and the Fangorn Forest, and some formations are tinted pink or red by iron-rich Saharan dust that settled on the islands while the cave was dry. These formations grew in air during ice-age low sea levels and were drowned when the sea rose, so they cannot regrow; a single careless fin stroke can break features that took tens of thousands of years to form.

Because the passages are deep enough that most dives involve decompression stops, and because the decoration is so fragile, diving here is organised as small, guide-led visits. Accounts from 2019 onward describe all cave diving in the surrounding South Abaco Blue Holes Conservation Area as supervised by an approved guide, with very small groups and sidemount equipment expected in most of the cave. Sidemount means carrying cylinders along the sides of the body instead of on the back, which lowers a diver's profile in tight or decorated passages.

The system matters to science as well as to divers. Fossils from the cave and nearby Sawmill Sink have been used to reconstruct Abaco's ice-age and pre-human wildlife, and the cave's formations are a record of past climate. Its protection was one of the reasons scientists and local explorers campaigned for the 2015 designation of the South Abaco blue holes park.

Géologie

The cave is a drowned dry cave: it formed in the island's limestone and was decorated with speleothems (mineral formations deposited by dripping water) while sea level was low, then flooded as sea level rose at the end of the last ice age. Divernet reports that the caves flooded roughly 10,000 to 13,000 years ago, have been dry during several separate glacial periods, and contain formations dated to around 350,000 years.

Eau, courant et crues

The inland caves of Abaco hold a lens of fresh water floating on denser salt water. The guiding operator for the cave reports a distinct halocline (the boundary layer where fresh and salt water meet, which blurs vision when disturbed) at about 17 m, with fresh water above and fully saline water below, and a near-constant water temperature of about 24 °C in the inland caves.

Pourquoi c'est important

The Florida Museum of Natural History reports that Dan's Cave has yielded fossils around 10,000 years old and describes delicate decorated zones such as the Cascade Room, Fangorn Forest and the Badlands. Researchers and explorer Brian Kakuk used finds from Abaco's blue holes to argue for the protection of the area, which led to the South Abaco blue holes park accepted by the Bahamian government in 2015.

Conditions

The operator describes the inland cave water as about 24 °C year-round, with a halocline near 17 m. Divernet describes visibility as exceptionally clear but gives no figure. Most dives involve decompression stops because much of the cave lies around 24 m or deeper.

Entrées et sites de plongée

Published accounts name two entrances, Dan's Cave and Ralph's Cave. Both lie inside the South Abaco Blue Holes Conservation Area, where cave diving has been reported as guide-only. Exact entrance locations are not published here.
