Padre Nuestro Complex
A cluster of water-filled sinkholes and caverns just east of Bayahibe, used by the Taíno as a fresh-water source and today tapped to supply local hotels. Its Cueva de Chicho is visited on guided dives from Bayahibe.
The Padre Nuestro complex is a group of sinkholes and caverns holding fresh water in the karst of the south-east Dominican Republic, a short distance east of the coastal village of Bayahibe. Archaeologists from Indiana University list four named caverns in the complex: El Toro, Padre Nuestro, Cueva Brujo and Cueva de Chicho.
The caverns were sources of drinking and cooking water for Taíno communities before European contact. Divers working with the Indiana University team recovered pottery water bottles (potizas) from the Chicho pool, and petroglyphs have been recorded there. In 2002 the complex was reported to supply water to hotels in the Bayahibe-Dominicus resort area.
Cueva de Chicho is the cave offered for guided dives. A steep slope leads down into a large chamber lit by daylight from the entrance, ending at a clear fresh-water pool from which a flooded passage continues. A Bayahibe dive centre runs guided visits there.
지질학
The complex lies in the limestone karst of the south-eastern Dominican Republic, a landscape of hundreds of caves and sinkholes formed by fresh water dissolving the bedrock.
수질, 유속 및 침수
Beeker and colleagues measured the Chicho pool as fresh water at a nearly constant 25 °C, with no measurable flow, little runoff and no oxygen-free layer.
왜 중요한가
One of the two flooded cave sites used by Beeker, Conrad and Foster (2002) to compare everyday and ritual Taíno use of water-filled caverns: the Chicho finds are almost all simple water bottles, pointing to routine water collection.
컨디션
Clear fresh water at about 25 °C in the Chicho pool (measured for the 2002 study). The complex is a drinking-water source for local hotels.
