Diving in Belize

Belize packs the world's second-longest barrier reef, three offshore atolls, and the most photographed sinkhole in diving into a country smaller than Wales. The Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the diving spreads along it in tiers: easy patch reefs and cuts near Ambergris Caye, spur-and-groove walls at the atolls, and the Great Blue Hole at Lighthouse Reef, a collapsed cavern roughly 124 meters deep whose stalactites hang in dim blue water past 30 meters. Nurse sharks and southern stingrays crowd the shallows at Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley, whale sharks pass Gladden Spit in spring, and the reef towns run on flip-flop time. English is official, logistics are simple, and the reef is genuinely close to shore.

The Belize Barrier Reef is the registry's single destination here and the country's spine: San Pedro and Caye Caulker serve the northern reef and Hol Chan Marine Reserve, while day trips and liveaboards reach the three atolls, Turneffe, Lighthouse Reef with the Great Blue Hole and Half Moon Caye wall, and remote Glover's Reef. Southern Belize adds Placencia, the gateway for seasonal whale sharks at Gladden Spit.

Signature experiences: Descending past stalactites in the Great Blue Hole; the wall at Half Moon Caye with its resident nurse sharks and garden eels; grouper and eagle rays along Turneffe's elbow; snorkeling Shark Ray Alley; whale sharks off Gladden Spit around the full moons of April and May.

Seasons: The dry season, roughly December through May, brings the most settled seas and the best atoll conditions; whale-shark aggregations near Placencia peak around the April and May full moons. June through November is wetter with hurricane risk, though many calm, clear days still occur.

Getting there: Fly into Philip S. W. Goldson International (BZE) near Belize City, with direct service from many US hubs. From there, 15-minute domestic hops or water taxis reach San Pedro and Caye Caulker; Placencia is a short flight or a few hours by road. Blue Hole trips leave very early from the northern cayes; liveaboards depart Belize City.

Entry & visas: Many nationalities, including US, Canadian, UK, and EU citizens, typically enter visa-free for short tourist stays, and a departure or border fee regime applies. Verify current requirements before travel.

What diving costs: Expect roughly USD 90-140 for a local two-tank reef trip from San Pedro or Caye Caulker, and USD 250-350 for the long full-day, three-dive Blue Hole and Lighthouse Reef runs. Marine reserve fees are charged separately at several sites.

Language: English is the official language, with Kriol and Spanish widely spoken; every dive shop operates in English.

Tipping: Tipping around 10-15 percent is customary in restaurants and for dive crews and guides, in either currency; some resorts add a service charge.

Travel safety: The cayes and reef towns are relaxed, with petty theft the main concern; parts of Belize City have significant crime and most divers simply transit through. Standard tropical cautions apply: sun, dehydration, and hurricane season from June through November. The Blue Hole is a deep, dark dive; respect the guided profile and your certification limits.

Recompression cover: A recompression chamber has long operated in San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, supported by a per-tank diver fee collected by local shops. Availability changes; confirm with your operator, and route any emergency through local EMS and DAN.
