Bonaire is the shore-diving capital of the world, and the claim survives scrutiny. The entire leeward coast is a marine park, protected since 1979, with more than 60 named sites marked by painted yellow stones along the coast road. You rent a pickup truck, load tanks from a drive-through fill station, and dive whenever you like: no boat schedule, no briefing queue, no surcharge for a third or fourth dive. The fringing reef begins meters from shore and slopes away in healthy hard coral, tarpon shadow night divers, and seahorses and frogfish reward slow eyes. The island is arid, cactus-covered, and refreshingly unglamorous. Lying south of the main hurricane belt, it delivers more divable days per year than almost anywhere in the Caribbean.

Bonaire is one destination diving as a single long reef: the leeward coast and the satellite islet of Klein Bonaire, reached by short boat runs, hold the bulk of the sites, from the double reef of the south near the salt pans to the sponge-heavy slopes off the national park in the north. The east coast is wilder, dived only in settled weather with local guides.

Experiências de eleição: Total shore-diving freedom with a truck full of tanks; the Hilma Hooker wreck between two reef ridges; the double-reef system at Alice in Wonderland; night dives with hunting tarpon at Town Pier area sites; Klein Bonaire's pristine slopes; 24-hour reef access for nitrox-fueled repetitive-dive weeks.

Épocas: Bonaire dives well every month; it sits south of most hurricane tracks and the trade winds keep the leeward coast calm. October through December is marginally wetter, and rare tropical systems can stir swell. Windier months affect the east coast far more than the sheltered west.

Como chegar: Flamingo International (BON) receives direct flights from Amsterdam, several US gateways including Miami, Atlanta, Houston, and Newark, and regional hops from Curaçao and Aruba. Once on-island, a pickup truck is the standard dive vehicle.

Entrada & vistos: Bonaire is a Dutch Caribbean special municipality; US, Canadian, EU, UK, and many other nationalities typically enter visa-free for short tourist stays. Verify current requirements and any visitor tax formalities before travel.

Quanto custa mergulhar: Unlimited-shore-tank packages typically run about USD 250-450 per week plus truck rental, with boat dives to Klein Bonaire around USD 50-70 per tank or USD 100-140 for two. A marine park fee, paid annually online or locally, is mandatory for all divers.

Idioma: Dutch and Papiamentu are the local languages, but English is spoken essentially everywhere a diver goes.

Gorjeta: Tipping 10-15 percent is customary in restaurants unless service is included; dive-shop staff and boat crews appreciate a tip at the end of a week.

Segurança em viagem: Bonaire is a safe, small island; the persistent nuisance is theft from parked dive trucks, so leave vehicles unlocked with nothing inside, as locals advise. Watch entries over ironshore rock, respect the no-touch, no-gloves park rules, and remember that easy conditions still produce decompression injuries when divers log four or five dives a day.

Cobertura de recompressão: A hyperbaric chamber operates at the hospital in Kralendijk, minutes from most dive sites. Availability changes; emergencies should still be routed through local EMS and DAN for assessment and coordination.
