Bonaire is the shore-diving capital of the world, and the claim survives scrutiny. The entire leeward coast is a marine park, protected since 1979, with more than 60 named sites marked by painted yellow stones along the coast road. You rent a pickup truck, load tanks from a drive-through fill station, and dive whenever you like: no boat schedule, no briefing queue, no surcharge for a third or fourth dive. Bonaire is one destination diving as a single long reef: the leeward coast and the satellite islet of Klein Bonaire, reached by short boat runs, hold the bulk of the sites, from the double reef of the south near the salt pans to the sponge-heavy slopes off the national park in the north. The east coast is wilder, dived only in settled weather with local guides.
