Colombia touches two oceans, but for divers one dot of Pacific rock defines the country: Malpelo, a bare volcanic outcrop 500 kilometers offshore, protected as a UNESCO World Heritage sanctuary and reachable only by liveaboard. The attraction is sharks at a scale few places still deliver. Schooling scalloped hammerheads pass in curtains, hundreds of silky sharks swirl in the blue, and the island's deep thermoclines occasionally bring the rarely seen smalltooth sand tiger within recreational reach. There is no lodging, no anchorage comfort, and no easy option; seas can be rough, currents strong, and every dive is a live-boat drop beside sheer rock. Divers treat Malpelo as the third point of the Eastern Pacific triangle with Cocos and the Galápagos, and its remoteness has kept it the least visited of the three.

Malpelo is the sole registry destination: expeditions circle the rock and its satellite pinnacles, working sites where hammerhead and silky shark schools stack up in the current. The wider country offers Caribbean reef diving around islands and coastal towns for travelers with more time, but the sanctuary is the reason dive itineraries point to Colombia.

Saisons: Boats visit across much of the year; the drier December-to-May stretch generally brings calmer surface conditions and cooler thermoclines that concentrate hammerheads shallower, while the wetter second half of the year favors plankton feeders and big silky numbers. Every season is expedition diving with advanced-level conditions.

Comment s'y rendre: International flights arrive in Bogotá or Cali; expeditions have traditionally departed from the Pacific port of Buenaventura, with some itineraries historically staged from neighboring countries. Crossings take around 30-40 hours each way, so confirm the current departure port and schedule with the operator.

Entrée & visas: Many Western nationalities enter Colombia visa-free for short tourist stays. Verify current requirements for your passport, and note that the Malpelo sanctuary itself requires permits arranged by the liveaboard.
