Tauchen in Curaçao

Curaçao is Bonaire's bigger, busier sibling, and its diving works the same way: a sheltered leeward coast, a fringing reef that starts within swimming distance of shore, and several dozen entry points where you can gear up beside the car. The difference is texture. Curaçao adds a real city, the Dutch-colonial waterfront of UNESCO-listed Willemstad, plus coves and cliffs that break the coastline into distinct little dive bays. The Superior Producer, a freighter that sank in 1977 just outside the harbor, is one of the Caribbean's better genuine wrecks, and the Tugboat, sitting in a few meters of clear water, may be its most photographed easy one. Reefs slope rather than wall out, sea turtles are dependable, and the island's dive culture is unhurried, affordable, and shore-first.

Curaçao is one destination with distinct stretches: the west end around Westpunt and Playa Kalki offers the calmest, clearest shore reefs; the central coast holds resort house reefs and the Tugboat; and the area near Willemstad adds the Superior Producer for divers comfortable with a little depth and current. Boat operators cover the same coast plus sites toward uninhabited Klein Curaçao.

Besondere Erlebnisse: The Superior Producer's intact hull at the edge of visibility; the shallow Tugboat with its sponge-crusted bow; turtle-rich shore reefs at Playa Grandi and Westpunt; drift days to Klein Curaçao's white-sand slope; night dives steps from your parked car.

Saisons: Curaçao lies south of most hurricane tracks and dives well all year; October through December is somewhat wetter, and occasional distant storms can send swell onto the leeward coast for a day or two. Trade winds matter mainly for the exposed east end, which most divers skip.

Anreise: Hato International (CUR) receives direct flights from Amsterdam, several US gateways, and regional islands. A rental car, ideally a pickup or SUV for the western beach tracks, is the practical way to reach the shore-diving bays.

Einreise & Visa: US, Canadian, EU, UK, and many other nationalities typically enter visa-free for short stays in this Dutch Caribbean country; a digital immigration card is completed before arrival. Verify current requirements before travel.

Was Tauchen kostet: Two-tank boat dives run roughly USD 90-120, shore-tank packages are economical, and truck-plus-tanks weeks in the Bonaire style are easy to arrange; overall costs sit below the region's resort islands.

Sprache: Dutch and Papiamentu are official and English and Spanish are spoken nearly everywhere; dive operations run comfortably in English.

Trinkgeld: Around 10-15 percent is customary in restaurants unless a service charge appears; dive staff appreciate an end-of-week tip.

Reisesicherheit: Curaçao is generally safe, with theft from parked cars at remote beaches the recurring nuisance; leave nothing visible in the vehicle. Entries over ironshore and small surf demand a little care, and the Superior Producer sits beside an active harbor channel, so dive it with an operator who watches traffic. Stay hydrated; the sun is relentless.

Dekompressionskammer in der Nähe: A hyperbaric chamber operates at the main hospital in Willemstad. Availability changes; emergencies should run through 912 local EMS and DAN for assessment and, if needed, treatment coordination.

Druckkammern (Planungsreferenz) Curaçao Medical Center hyperbaric facility, Willemstad. Verfügbarkeit kann sich ändern – im Notfall zuerst den lokalen Rettungsdienst und DAN (+1-919-684-9111) anrufen. Vollständiges Verzeichnis →
