Diving in Panama
Panama's diving reputation rests on Coiba, a former penal-colony island turned UNESCO-listed national park in the Pacific's Gulf of Chiriquí. The isolation that kept people away kept the sea intact: schooling jacks and snappers in serious numbers, whitetip reef sharks stacked on ledges, seasonal whale sharks, and humpback whales singing through the water column in the second half of the year. Conditions are honest Eastern Pacific — plankton-fed water, thermoclines that drop the temperature mid-dive, and current-swept pinnacles — closer in spirit to the Galápagos than to the Caribbean. Most diving runs as long day trips from the surf town of Santa Catalina. The country's Caribbean coast has reefs too, but Coiba is the reason divers route through Panama.
Coiba is the registry destination: Coiba National Park's islands and pinnacles, dived from Santa Catalina on the mainland about an hour-plus away by boat. Sites around Isla Coiba, Canales de Afuera, and nearby rocks mix sharky ledges, big schools, and occasional pelagic surprises; park fees and ranger checks are part of the routine.
Signature experiences: Whitetips carpeting a ledge at a Coiba pinnacle; a wall of bigeye jacks folding around you; hearing humpback song through the water in the July-October whale season; sighting a passing whale shark in the plankton bloom months; boat rides past an island still covered in untouched forest.
Seasons: The December-April dry season brings the calmest seas and easiest logistics, with cooler thermoclines from seasonal upwelling. The green season is wetter and choppier but runs warmer water and the humpback migration roughly July-October; whale sharks are most reported in the warmer plankton-rich months. Year-round diving is realistic with flexibility.

The practical file
Getting there: Fly to Tocumen International (PTY) in Panama City, one of Latin America's best-connected hubs. Santa Catalina is then a roughly 5-6 hour road journey (or a domestic flight toward Santiago/David plus drive); Coiba itself is reached only by boat from the coast.
Entry & visas: Many nationalities enter Panama visa-free for tourism; requirements include onward-travel and funds checks in principle, and rules change, so verify current requirements for your passport before travel.
What diving costs: Coiba day trips typically price in the US$150-220 range for two to three tanks including park logistics, with Santa Catalina lodging spanning backpacker to boutique; overall Panama travel costs sit mid-range for the Americas.
Language: Spanish is the official language; English is common in tourism but far from universal in rural Veraguas, so a few Spanish phrases help.
Tipping: Around 10 percent is customary in restaurants; tipping dive guides and boat crews for good service is standard practice.
Travel safety: Tourist routes are generally safe with normal city precautions in Panama City and Colón. For divers the real considerations are remoteness: long boat runs, current and surge at exposed sites, and limited services around Santa Catalina. The Darién region's issues are far from any dive itinerary.
Recompression cover: Recompression options are concentrated around Panama City and are limited near Coiba; confirm your operator's evacuation plan before diving remote sites, and route emergencies through local EMS and DAN.
