Taiwan is East Asia's overlooked dive stop, and Green Island is its flagship. Getting there: Fly into Taipei Taoyuan (TPE) or Kaohsiung (KHH), travel to Taitung by domestic flight or train, then take the roughly 50-minute ferry or short prop flight to Green Island. Ferries are weather-dependent; motion-sickness precautions are folk wisdom for the crossing.
Entry & visas: Many nationalities enter Taiwan visa-free for short stays; durations and eligibility change, so verify current requirements with Taiwanese authorities before travel.
What diving costs: Diving is good value: boat or shore fun dives commonly equate to roughly US$30-60 each, and island lodging is simple and inexpensive; Taiwan travel overall costs less than Japan and more than Southeast Asia's cheapest corners.
Language: Mandarin is the main language; English is workable in established dive shops but limited elsewhere, so translation apps earn their keep.
Tipping: Tipping is not customary in Taiwan; a sincere thank-you and a returned beer with the crew go further than cash.
Travel safety: Taiwan is a very safe, orderly place to travel.
