Taiwan is East Asia's overlooked dive stop, and Green Island is its flagship. This small volcanic island off Taitung sits directly in the Kuroshio Current, which delivers warm, startlingly clear blue water to coral slopes, boulder gardens, and drop-offs a short ride from the harbor. Reef diving here is bright and easy in season; the island's other reputation is anything but — in the cooler months, schooling scalloped hammerheads pass a deep, current-exposed corner that draws experienced divers from across Asia for cold, blue-water drops. Topside, Green Island adds saltwater hot springs and a sobering prison-history museum. Diving culture on Taiwan proper continues at Kenting and Xiaoliuqiu, but the registry's focus, rightly, is the island the Kuroshio touches first.

The registry destination is Green Island (Lüdao), reached from Taitung on Taiwan's southeast coast. Diving concentrates on the island's fringing reefs — sheltered sides shift with the monsoon — with harbor-side shore entries, short boat runs, and the famous seasonal hammerhead drop off the southern tip for suitably experienced divers.

Experiências de eleição: Blue Kuroshio water over coral boulders with visibility that flatters every dive; the winter hammerhead drop, drifting deep in open blue as the school resolves; night soaks in Zhaori's saltwater hot springs; anemone cities and reef fish thick along the drop-offs.

Épocas: April through October brings the warmest water and gentlest seas, with typhoon watches a summer reality that can shut ferries for days. The northeast monsoon roughens winter, which is exactly when the hammerhead season runs (roughly December-March) — a cold, advanced, conditions-dependent specialty rather than a general recommendation.

Como chegar: Fly into Taipei Taoyuan (TPE) or Kaohsiung (KHH), travel to Taitung by domestic flight or train, then take the roughly 50-minute ferry or short prop flight to Green Island. Ferries are weather-dependent; motion-sickness precautions are folk wisdom for the crossing.

Entrada & vistos: Many nationalities enter Taiwan visa-free for short stays; durations and eligibility change, so verify current requirements with Taiwanese authorities before travel.

Quanto custa mergulhar: Diving is good value: boat or shore fun dives commonly equate to roughly US$30-60 each, and island lodging is simple and inexpensive; Taiwan travel overall costs less than Japan and more than Southeast Asia's cheapest corners.

Idioma: Mandarin is the main language; English is workable in established dive shops but limited elsewhere, so translation apps earn their keep.

Gorjeta: Tipping is not customary in Taiwan; a sincere thank-you and a returned beer with the crew go further than cash.

Segurança em viagem: Taiwan is a very safe, orderly place to travel. The practical risks are environmental: typhoons in summer, strong currents at exposed corners, and the island's scooter traffic, which causes more visitor injuries than the sea does. The hammerhead dive is genuinely advanced — deep, cold, blue-water drifting — and operators vet experience.

Cobertura de recompressão: Hyperbaric medicine is available at major hospitals on Taiwan proper, and arrangements for the offshore islands change; confirm the current emergency pathway with your operator and route incidents through 119 and DAN.

Instalações hiperbáricas (referência de planeamento) Taitung hyperbaric facility, Taitung. A disponibilidade pode mudar — em caso de emergência, ligue primeiro para o SAMU local e para a DAN (+1-919-684-9111). Diretório completo →
