For traveling divers, the United Kingdom means one name above all: Scapa Flow. In this sheltered Orkney anchorage the interned German High Seas Fleet was scuttled by its own crews on 21 June 1919, and seven of those warships — three König-class battleships and four light cruisers — still lie in the cold, dark water, joined by blockships and a century of harbor history. It is widely held to be Europe's finest wreck diving: big steel at 25-45 meters, dived from famously well-run day boats out of Stromness. The wrecks are protected as scheduled monuments, dived look-don't-touch, and HMS Royal Oak, sunk in 1939 with the loss of over 800 lives, is a designated war grave closed to sport divers. Cold-water skills and a drysuit are the price of entry.

Winter diving happens but weather rules everything. Book boats well ahead — the fleet's capacity sells out to clubs months in advance.

Getting there: Fly to Kirkwall (KOI) via Scottish hubs such as Edinburgh, Glasgow, or Aberdeen, or take the NorthLink ferry from Aberdeen or Scrabster to Orkney. Boats board in Stromness; most divers ship or bring full cold-water kit including drysuits.

Entry & visas: The UK admits many nationalities without a visa for short visits and has introduced an Electronic Travel Authorisation scheme in stages; verify current requirements for your nationality before travel.

Travel safety: The UK is a very safe destination; the risk profile is entirely underwater. Scapa's wrecks are deep, cold, and dark by warm-water standards — drysuit competence, good buoyancy, and ideally nitrox or appropriate technical training are expected, and penetration belongs to the trained. The wrecks are protected: take nothing, and respect the closed war graves absolutely.
