Curaçao
Curaçao is the big, urbane sister of the Dutch Leewards, and its diving hides in plain sight along seventy kilometers of leeward coast. Willemstad's UNESCO-listed waterfront sits minutes from one of the Caribbean's best wrecks, the Superior Producer, while the island's wild northwest end holds coral formations, like the eroded heads of Mushroom Forest, that feel a century removed from the capital's traffic.
Why dive here
The island rewards divers who like to roam. Dozens of marked shore entries line the sheltered southwest coast, from sandy resort house reefs to fishing-village bays below Westpunt's cliffs, and the reef structure changes character as you go: terraces and drop-offs in the center, current-brushed coral meadows at Watamula on the northern tip, and the strange, undercut star-coral heads of Mushroom Forest. The Superior Producer, an upright freighter in thirty meters just outside the harbor mouth, ranks among the region's most atmospheric wreck dives, its rails furred in orange cup corals that open after dark. Sitting south of most storm tracks, Curaçao dives twelve months a year, and its restaurants, museums, and Dutch-Caribbean street life fill the surface intervals better than almost any pure dive island could.

Getting there: Direct flights from Amsterdam, Miami, New York, and regional hubs. A rental car is close to essential for reaching the western shore entries.
Where to stay: Stay west of Willemstad for quick access to the best reefs; Westpunt suits divers, while the city and Jan Thiel suit those splitting time with nightlife.
