Mafia Island
Mafia Island, south of Zanzibar and far quieter, protects Tanzania's oldest marine park and one of the Indian Ocean's most dependable whale shark aggregations. Inside Chole Bay, tide-flushed coral gardens and walls stay sheltered year-round; outside, Kinasi Pass runs as a classic channel drift. From roughly October to February, juvenile whale sharks feed at the surface off Kilindoni and are met by snorkel — an encounter that rivals anywhere in Africa.

Mafia rewards divers who value ecosystem over spectacle-a-minute. Chole Bay, the heart of Mafia Island Marine Park, is a broad tidal lagoon whose passes and inner reefs hold dense hard coral, sweeping schools of snapper, ribbontail rays on the sand, and turtles in the seagrass. Kinasi Pass concentrates the action: dive it on the right tide and the incoming ocean water carries you over grouper, barracuda, and coral heads swirling with fusiliers. Outside the bay, walls like Dindini drop clean and rarely see another boat. The island's second act is the whale shark season off Kilindoni, where resident juveniles feed on surface plankton in calm, shallow water — reliable enough between October and February that researchers have tracked individuals here for years, and conducted by snorkel under park guidelines. The long rains close most operations around April-May. Mafia has no crowds, no nightlife to speak of, and no shortcuts; it trades polish for the sense of having an entire marine park nearly to yourself.

Hoe kom je er: Light aircraft hop from Dar es Salaam to Kilindoni in about 30 minutes; most lodges sit on Chole Bay, a 30-45 minute transfer across the island.
Waar verblijven: A handful of small lodges around Utende and Chole Bay, plus simple guesthouses in Kilindoni; book ahead in whale shark season.
Kosten: Mafia Island Marine Park charges a daily entry fee (on the order of US$20-25) on top of diving; whale shark trips price separately.

Gevaren: Tidal currents in the passes, shallow coral heads on lagoon crossings at low tide, and remoteness — help is far away.
Dive the passes on the tide your operator calls and keep profiles conservative; evacuation from Mafia is slow. Whale shark snorkeling follows park code-of-conduct distances.
