Port Sudan & Sanganeb — illustration

Port Sudan & Sanganeb

Sudan's Red Sea is the sea the pioneers described - Sanganeb's lighthouse atoll, Cousteau's abandoned undersea village at Sha'ab Rumi, the munitions-filled Umbria - with reefs that see a few hundred divers a year rather than a few hundred a day. It has always been liveaboard territory with thin infrastructure. Since war broke out in April 2023, dive tourism has stopped; what follows describes the diving as it stands whenever the country is accessible.

Por qué bucear aquí

Sudanese reefs carry a density of sharks the northern Red Sea lost decades ago. Grey reef sharks own the South Plateau of Sha'ab Rumi; scalloped hammerheads school off Sanganeb's North Point in the cooler months; silvertips rise from deep water at remote northern reefs like Angarosh. At Sha'ab Rumi you can still swim through the onion-domed hangar and tool shed of Precontinent II, the habitat Cousteau's team occupied for a month in 1963. The Umbria, scuttled at Wingate Reef in 1940 with some 360,000 bombs still aboard, is among the most complete large wrecks anywhere. In late summer, manta rays gather off Mesharifa in Dungonab Bay. The price has always been logistics: long crossings, basic ports, no safety net - and, at present, a war that keeps the whole coast off-limits.

Mes a mes

Historically the fleet ran roughly October through June, with sharks best in the cooler months and Mesharifa's mantas in late summer. All of it is theoretical while the conflict lasts - verify the situation and your government's travel advice before planning anything.

Cómo llegar y dónde alojarse

Cómo llegar: In normal times, fly to Port Sudan and join the boat at the harbor. Nothing about the route can be assumed while the conflict continues.

Dónde alojarse: The boat is the accommodation; a night in a basic Port Sudan hotel bookended cruises in normal times.

Liveaboards: Boats traditionally departed Port Sudan, and some Egyptian vessels ran deep-south crossings in season. As of early 2026 operators had suspended Sudan itineraries - the war that began in April 2023 remains unresolved, and Port Sudan itself has seen strikes.

Costes: Liveaboard-only, historically priced at a premium over Egypt for fuel, permits, and remoteness. Cash economy ashore; visas and permits were handled by the operator.

Entre inmersiones: Minimal by design - the draw is the sea. Some itineraries added a climb up Sanganeb's lighthouse for the view across the atoll.

Seguridad y aspectos prácticos

Riesgos: Active armed conflict since April 2023 - most governments advise against all travel to Sudan; remoteness, strong currents, and deep plateaus compound ordinary risk; no dependable recompression support.

Until the war ends and services resume, this destination is effectively closed. When it reopens, treat it as expedition diving: conservative profiles, full redundancy, and honest fitness for current.

Cámara de recompresión más cercana: No reliably operating chamber; evacuation options are poor even in peacetime. Availability changes - emergencies route through EMS and DAN, with long delays likely.
