Travel & Packing

Getting a dive kit across the world intact: what flies carry-on, how to beat weight limits, battery and knife rules, and the pre- and post-trip routines that protect your gear.

구매 또는 렌탈
Not a purchase category: own a light bag and a luggage…

A dive kit is designed to survive the ocean; airports are another matter. Packing well is mostly the art of deciding what can be trusted to the checked-baggage system and what cannot, then working within weight rules that were not written with wetsuits in mind.

The carry-on list is short and non-negotiable: dive computer, regulator set in its padded bag, mask in its box, certification cards and logbook (or their app equivalents plus a photo backup), any prescription lenses, medications, and - by airline regulation, not preference - all spare lithium batteries and power banks, terminals protected. Cameras and housings join them for anyone carrying imaging gear. The principle is that anything expensive, fragile, or trip-ending if lost flies with you; a delayed bag should cost you a wetsuit rental, not the trip. The checked side takes the bulk - BCD (fully deflated), wetsuit rolled around breakables, fins along the bag's spine, boots stuffed with small items - and, always checked and never carried on, every knife, shear, and line cutter you own. Tanks and weights do not travel at all; the whole world rents them.

Weight is the game. Typical international allowances of 20-23 kg meet a full kit of 12-18 kg plus clothes, so the tactics matter: a light empty bag (weigh it before buying), a travel-cut BCD if you fly often, full-foot fins for warm trips, e-learning instead of books, and a luggage scale used at home rather than at the counter. Some airlines offer sports-equipment allowances or prepaid heavy bags at better rates - checking the policy the week before beats negotiating at dawn. Couples split kit across bags so no single loss is total; solo travelers put first-wave essentials in the cabin and accept that everything else is replaceable en route.

Paperwork and timing: carry certification proof and any insurance details where wet hands can reach them, remember that dive-travel and dive-accident coverage are separate products worth having, and honor the flying-after-diving conventions - mainstream guidance calls for a surface interval before flight of around 12 hours after single no-stop dives and 18 or more after repetitive days, so plan the last dive day accordingly rather than testing the rule. Booking morning departures after a full rest day solves it without arithmetic.

Before the trip, service anything due and pool-test anything freshly serviced; a kit checked at home fails at home. Confirm the destination's fittings - DIN or yoke - and pack the adapter; confirm voltage for chargers; ask about glove bans and marker conventions where relevant. After the trip, the routine that saves gear is unglamorous: everything out of the bag the day you land, fresh-water soak and rinse, full shade-dry before storage, and a five-minute damage inventory while the trip is fresh - the corroded clip noticed today is the one that will not fail in six months. Biosecurity deserves a final word: several countries inspect damp outdoor equipment at the border, so arriving with clean, dry gear is both courtesy and queue insurance.

Packed this way, a kit crosses the world for years - and the diver behind it starts every trip with the only luggage that truly matters: a working computer, a fitting mask, and a regulator that knows their breathing.
