The Dive Trip Packing List That Saves Dives

More dive days are lost to a missing o-ring or a forgotten certification card than to weather. What to bring, what to rent, and the small kit that rescues a trip.

Ask any dive guide what ends more dive days, storms or small forgotten things, and they will vote for the forgotten things. A snapped fin strap with no spare, a certification card sitting in a drawer at home, a mask that fits nobody's face but its owner's — these are the trip-killers, and every one of them is preventable with a list.

Documents and non-negotiables

  • Certification card, physical or verified digital, plus your logbook or app history — reputable operators will ask for both.
  • Dive insurance details and the emergency contact numbers that go with them, saved offline and written on paper.
  • Dive computer, charged, with its manual downloaded if the interface is exotic.
  • Your mask. Fit is personal in a way no other gear item matches; even divers who rent everything else travel with their own.
  • Any personal medication, in original packaging, in carry-on luggage.

The save-a-dive kit

A pouch the size of a paperback rescues more trips than any single piece of gear. Stock it with spare o-rings in several sizes, a silicone-safe lubricant, a spare mask strap and fin strap, a regulator mouthpiece with zip ties, a snorkel keeper, defog, a few cable ties and bungee lengths, and a compact multi-tool — the tool packed in checked baggage, since blades never fly in the cabin. Shops at big destinations sell all of this; shops at small ones may not, and Saturday evening before a Sunday boat is exactly when you find out.

Exposure protection by destination

Match the suit to the water, not the brochure. Tropical water at 27–30 °C suits a skin or 3 mm; the 22–26 °C band is 5 mm territory for most people; temperate water below that means 7 mm with hood and gloves, or a drysuit and the training to use it. When in doubt go one step warmer — repetitive days chill you cumulatively, and nobody has ever regretted being comfortable on a night dive.

Bring, rent, or split

Tanks and weights are rented at the destination, always; nobody sane flies them. Beyond that it is a spectrum: fit-critical items travel with you, bulky commodity items rent well at established destinations, and regulators sit in the middle — your own, freshly serviced, is a comfort worth its kilogram. Traveling with a buddy, split essentials across both checked bags so one lost bag grounds neither diver. In carry-on, keep the things that cannot be rented or replaced overnight: computer, mask, prescription lenses, medication, camera, batteries, and a swimsuit, so a delayed bag costs you rental fees rather than dive days.

Round out the bag with the small civilization that dive days consume: plug adapters for the destination, chargers and spare batteries for computer and camera, a dry bag for the boat, reef-considerate sunscreen where local rules require it, basic seasickness supplies chosen with your pharmacist, and paper copies of certifications and insurance in case a phone dies wet. Weigh the packed bag at home against your airline's limit, leave the just-in-case third wetsuit behind, and remember the oldest rule of dive travel: pack half of what you think you need and twice the patience.
