Flying with Dive Gear: What Goes Where and Why

A full dive bag flirts with every airline weight limit. Which items must ride in the cabin, what stays home entirely, and how to survive island hoppers with tighter allowances.

A complete set of dive gear weighs roughly 15–20 kg before you add clothes, which is why the dive bag and the airline scale meet as adversaries. Getting gear across the world intact is mostly a matter of knowing three lists: what must fly in the cabin, what must not, and what should never leave home at all.

Cabin, hold, or home

  • Carry-on, always: your regulator (fragile, precise, expensive to replace mid-trip), dive computer, camera bodies and lenses, prescription masks, medication — and every spare lithium battery you own. Aviation rules require spare lithium batteries in the cabin with terminals protected; most airlines allow spares under 100 watt-hours without special approval. Tape the contacts or bag them individually.
  • Checked baggage only: knives, line cutters, shears, and any tool with an edge or a point.
  • Leave at home: weights, which are rentable everywhere, and tanks. Airlines require cylinders to be empty with the valve removed for inspection, and virtually no destination justifies the hassle — rent both on arrival.

Winning the weight game

Standard international checked allowances hover around 23 kg, which a full gear bag plus a week of clothes will threaten. Practical countermeasures: weigh everything at home, choose a lightweight soft duffel over a wheeled fortress, let the wetsuit pad the BCD, and rent the heavy commodity items — tanks, weights, sometimes the BCD itself — at the destination. Some airlines offer sports-equipment allowances or let dive gear travel as a discounted extra bag; the rules vary by carrier and fare class, so check the current policy for your specific route rather than trusting forum folklore. Photographers with serious rigs often wear the padded jacket, carry the camera backpack, and accept one paid extra bag as a cost of the craft.

Island hoppers and seaplanes

The last leg is where allowances bite. Small regional aircraft and seaplanes — the Maldives transfer being the classic case — publish combined weight limits well below international norms, sometimes with soft-bag requirements and per-kilo excess charges. Confirm the domestic leg's rules when you book, not at the dock, and ask your resort or liveaboard: most have daily experience shepherding dive bags through and will tell you exactly what clears.

Protecting it and proving it

Pad regulators inside neoprene even in the cabin bag, photograph your packed gear and serial numbers for any insurance claim, use luggage locks acceptable to your departure country's inspectors, and tag bags inside and out. Build a buffer day between landing and your first dive: it converts a delayed bag from a crisis into an anecdote, and after a long-haul flight your ears and sleep will thank you anyway. If a bag does go missing, a decent operator can rent you everything except your certification — which is, once again, why the card and computer were in your pocket.

Two habits for the trip home: book connections on a single ticket where possible so bags check through and the airline owns any missed transfer, and dry your gear thoroughly before repacking — soaked neoprene carries kilograms of water you will pay excess charges to fly, and it arrives home smelling like a verdict.
