Nitrogen and Your Body

Four fifths of every breath is a gas your body merely stores. What on-gassing and off-gassing mean, where no-decompression limits come from, and why divers surface slowly and skip the next-morning flight.

About four out of every five parts of the air you are breathing right now are nitrogen. Your body does not use it; it simply rides along, in and out, unnoticed. Underwater, the deal changes. Pressure pushes extra nitrogen into your blood and tissues, the way gas is held inside an unopened soda bottle. Rise slowly, and that nitrogen slips quietly back out through your lungs. Rise too fast, and it can fizz into bubbles the way a shaken soda foams over — and bubbles in the wrong places can hurt you. Nearly every safety rule in diving traces back to this one fact.

The physics has a name — Henry's law: the deeper you go, the higher the pressure, and the more gas dissolves into liquid, including the liquid that is mostly you. Descend, and your tissues begin absorbing nitrogen toward a new balance set by the depth; divers call it on-gassing. Different tissues load at different speeds — blood and brain within minutes, joints and fat over many hours — which is why decompression models juggle a whole family of imaginary "compartments" rather than one clock.

The no-decompression limit

Stay down long enough at a given depth and you cross a line where a direct swim to the surface is no longer considered safe, because too much nitrogen is aboard. That line is the no-decompression limit, and recreational diving is defined by staying inside it. The limit collapses as depth grows: roughly an hour of allowance near 18 meters shrinks to about twenty minutes at 30 meters on common recreational tables. A dive computer does this bookkeeping continuously against your actual profile, credits you for shallow time, and carries the tally across repeated dives — because nitrogen from the morning's dive is still leaving your body during the afternoon's. Treat the limit as a boundary to stay well clear of, not a target to ride.

Coming up is where safety lives

Off-gassing needs time and gentleness. Training and computers cap ascents — figures between 9 and 18 meters per minute are standard, and slower is the modern habit — and essentially every dive ends with a safety stop, three minutes hovering around 5 meters, cheap insurance while fast tissues dump their surplus. The process does not end at the ladder: you continue off-gassing for hours at the surface. That is why mainstream guidance says wait at least 12 hours before flying after a single no-stop dive and at least 18 after multiple days of diving, and why the last day of a dive trip ends at the pool bar rather than the drop-off.

When nitrogen misbehaves

Nitrogen causes two unrelated problems that beginners often blur together. At depth, elevated nitrogen pressure has a mildly anesthetic effect on the nervous system — narcosis, a reversible fuzziness that fades as you ascend. After ascent, the concern is decompression sickness: bubbles forming in tissue, announced by joint pain, unusual fatigue, tingling, numbness, a blotchy rash, or weakness, usually within hours of surfacing. The response is never to shrug it off: breathe oxygen if available, contact emergency services and the Divers Alert Network, and let a hyperbaric physician decide what happens next. Risk stays low when limits, ascent rates, and stops are respected — but it is never zero, and dehydration, hard exertion, cold, and individual factors can tilt the odds. Personal medical questions, including heart conditions such as a PFO, belong with a physician trained in dive medicine, not with a forum thread.

One postscript: enriched-air nitrox is simply air with some nitrogen swapped for oxygen. Less nitrogen per breath means longer no-decompression limits at moderate depths — a nitrogen-management tool, not a deep-diving tool, since the extra oxygen imposes its own depth ceiling and a short certification course of its own. However you manage it, the game is the same: keep an invisible gas dissolved, give it time to leave politely, and the whole sport stays boring in exactly the right way.
