Aliwal Shoal Marine Protected Area

Aliwal Shoal is a fossilized dune reef about 5 km off Umkomaas on KwaZulu-Natal's subtropical coast, first protected as an MPA in 2004 and folded into South Africa's expanded MPA network in 2019. The shoal's ledges, gullies, and pinnacles host one of the world's most reliable shark line-ups: ragged-tooth sharks (sand tigers) packing the caves and amphitheater in winter, blacktips year-round on baited dives, seasonal tigers, and passing hammerheads, all layered over potato bass, turtles, and the June–July sardine run traffic just offshore. Launches punch out through the Umkomaas river mouth surf, which is part of the experience.

The rules that bind divers

Scuba diving in South African MPAs requires a personal scuba permit issued by the national environment department (sold at post offices and valid for a year), carried on every dive; operators also hold boat and activity permits. The MPA is zoned, with restricted areas where fishing is banned — including protection put in place for the raggie aggregation caves — and controlled zones where limited pelagic angling continues, a long-running local tension. No spearfishing in restricted zones, no collecting, and baited shark dives run under operator permits and codes of conduct. The wrecks Produce and Nebo fall inside the MPA.

Fees & permits: Annual personal MPA scuba permit (modest, government-set fee) plus normal charter costs; operators usually remind visitors before the first launch.
