Daymaniyat Islands Nature Reserve

The nine Daymaniyat islands lie in a line about 18 km off Oman's Batinah coast near Muscat, protected as the country's first marine nature reserve by royal decree in 1996. Low limestone islets ring underwater terrain unusual for the Arabian Sea: dense table-coral fields, black coral thickets, and clean-water reefs that host hawksbill and green turtles in numbers, honeycomb morays, big schools of snapper and fusiliers, zebra (leopard) sharks, and — from late summer into fall — reliably curious whale sharks and passing mobula squadrons. Day boats reach the reserve from Muscat's marinas and Al Mussanah in under an hour, making it the emirate-free Gulf's most accessible protected diving.

The rules that bind divers

Entry requires a permit from Oman's Environment Authority, arranged routinely by licensed dive centers, with per-person fees for diving or snorkeling days. Landing on the islands is prohibited during the seabird and turtle nesting season (roughly May through October) and restricted to designated beaches otherwise. Fishing and collecting are banned within reserve boundaries, boats use installed moorings or anchor only on sand, and wildlife interaction follows no-touch, no-chase rules — including for whale sharks. Rangers patrol from the mainland, and operators carry the permit paperwork aboard.
