iSimangaliso Wetland Park

iSimangaliso — 'place of miracles' in Zulu — was South Africa's first World Heritage site, proclaimed in 1999 across some 3,320 km² of linked ecosystems on the Elephant Coast: Lake St Lucia's estuary, coastal dune forest, swamps, and a marine section running up to the Mozambique border. For divers the park means Sodwana Bay, whose sandstone reefs — Quarter Mile, Two Mile through Nine Mile — carry the southernmost true coral communities in Africa, dense with tropical fish, turtles, potato bass, and wintering ragged-tooth sharks. Leatherback and loggerhead turtles nest on the park's beaches, and humpbacks parade offshore in winter.

The rules that bind divers

The marine section is zoned, with sanctuary and restricted areas where fishing is prohibited and controlled zones for regulated angling; divers need the standard South African MPA scuba permit plus park entry. Vehicle access to Sodwana's beach launch is controlled — operators hold launch permits, and private 4x4 beach driving is restricted to permitted launches only. Turtle nesting beaches are protected, with guided turtle tours only in season. No collecting, no spearfishing in sanctuary zones, and boats launch and operate under park authority oversight.

Fees & permits: Park entry fees per person and per vehicle at the gate, plus the annual national MPA scuba permit; dive operators advise on both.
