Bristol Blenheim Bomber
История проекта
Malta in 1941 was an unsinkable aircraft carrier under siege, its Blenheim squadrons flying low-level strikes against the Axis convoys feeding North Africa — missions with brutal loss rates. Returning from one such sortie in December 1941, this Blenheim Mk IV, damaged and unable to reach its airfield, ditched in the sea off Xrobb l-Għaġin on the island's southeast corner; the crew got out of the sinking aircraft. What settled onto the flat sand at 42 meters has become one of the Mediterranean's finest aircraft wrecks. The airframe sits upright and readably complete: both radial engines in place — one with its propeller — the main spar and wings spanning the sand with fabric long gone and framework exposed, undercarriage tucked beneath, and the cockpit area open where the canopy and nose glazing have collapsed. Its depth keeps casual traffic away and has preserved detail that shallower aircraft wrecks lost decades ago. The site now sits within Malta's managed historic-wreck scheme, dived by arrangement through authorized centers, and the flat, dark seabed gives the little bomber the presence of a museum piece lit only by torches.
