Mikhail Lermontov
История проекта
The Mikhail Lermontov was the Soviet Union's showpiece cruise liner in the Pacific, an East German-built ship of 1972 named for the Romantic poet and filled, on her final voyage, mostly with Australian holidaymakers. On 16 February 1986, leaving Picton through the Marlborough Sounds with a local pilot conning her, she was taken through the narrow gap between Cape Jackson and its lighthouse — water no ship her size had business in. Rocks opened her side, and after hours of slow flooding she rolled over and sank that evening in Port Gore. Nearby vessels took off more than 700 people into the rain and dark; one refrigeration engineer died below decks. The inquiry's oddities — a pilot's inexplicable shortcut, Cold War rumor filling every gap — keep the story alive. She lies on her starboard side in cool green water at the top of the South Island, the largest easily reached cruise-ship wreck in the world, and one that has taken divers' lives inside: her corridors reward training and punish bravado.
Как она затонула: Holed on rocks off Cape Jackson under a local pilot's conning on 16 February 1986 and sank that night in Port Gore.

Условие: Substantially intact, with fittings, glazing, and signage still in place; cold water has slowed decay but interior collapse advances year by year.
Пещерное погружение: Full With Training. Vast rotated interiors — ballroom, shops, cabins — are dived by wreck-trained teams with lines and lights; multiple diver fatalities here make the point better than any warning text. Погружение в любую замкнутую среду требует специальной подготовки — как минимум сертификата по рэк-дайвингу, а для полного проникновения — технической подготовки по рэкам.
Рекомендуемая сертификация: Advanced Open Water; formal wreck-penetration training essential for the interior
Течение: Mild · Видимость: 3–12 m
Морская жизнь: Blue cod and tarakihi over the hull, jewel anemones and encrusting sponge on the rails, big crayfish in the dark, and kingfish flashing past the mooring line.
Опасности: Low visibility, cold, silt that stacks in every corridor, and an interior scaled like an office block lying on its side.
Охрана и законодательство
The wreck lies in Port Gore at the outer edge of the Marlborough Sounds and is dived by charter from Picton and Anakiwa; no formal heritage restriction applies, but operators enforce respectful, trained-access practice.
Crockery and fittings belong to the wreck's story — leave them in the dark where they lie.
