P29 Patrol Boat
A história
The P29 began life in the Cold War's other Germany. Built in the German Democratic Republic as the Kondor-class minesweeper Boltenhagen, she swept and patrolled the Baltic for East German border forces until reunification made her surplus; Malta bought her in the 1990s and ran her as patrol boat P29 with the Armed Forces of Malta's maritime squadron, chasing smugglers and running rescue tasks around the islands. Retired and stripped, she was scuttled in August 2007 on the sand off Ċirkewwa point, Malta's busiest dive area at the island's northwest tip, a short fin from the reef and the tugboat Rozi. She sits perfectly upright in about 35 meters, compact enough to tour in one dive: forecastle gun mount, bridge, funnel and sweep deck all present, with the superstructure beginning in the mid-twenties of meters. Ambitious shore divers reach her from the Ċirkewwa entry points, though the depth makes short work of no-decompression time. Chromis cloud her mast, scorpionfish tuck into the winches, and the clean Malta visibility usually shows the whole 52-meter warship from the descent.
Como afundou: Deliberately scuttled as an artificial reef off Ċirkewwa, 14 August 2007.
A mergulhar nela hoje
Condição: Upright and intact; lighter mast and railing sections corroding
Penetração: Limited. A few prepared openings allow brief looks inside the bridge and hull; spaces are tight and the depth argues for keeping tours external. Entrar em qualquer ambiente fechado requer formação específica — no mínimo uma certificação de mergulho em naufrágios, e formação técnica em naufrágios para penetração total.
Certificação recomendada: Advanced Open Water
Corrente: Mild · Visibilidade: 20–35 m
Vida marinha: Damselfish shimmer around the mast, barracuda visit in summer, scorpionfish and morays occupy the deck gear, and nudibranchs work the rails.
Perigos: Depth on limited no-deco time, boat traffic at a busy dive point, and occasional current off the headland
