MV Produce
Die Geschichte dahinter
The Produce was a Norwegian bulk carrier running molasses up the KwaZulu-Natal coast when, in rough winter seas in August 1974, she came in over Aliwal Shoal's northern pinnacles and ripped her hull open. She limped clear and went down just off the shoal, her crew rescued in a scramble of local ski-boats out of Umkomaas — a piece of town lore that helped bind the fishing village to the reef that later made it a diving destination. The wreck has spent fifty years breaking down on the sand in about 30 meters: the hull has collapsed into avenues of plating, frames and machinery, listing sections forming overhangs and dark hollows. Those hollows hold her most famous residents. Giant brindle bass — grouper the size of small cars — have lived on the Produce for decades, and the wreck swarms with harlequin goldies, a splash of orange endemic color found here in unusual density. Ragged-tooth sharks pass through in season, potato bass supervise, and thick baitfish clouds pulse over the steel in summer. She pairs with the nearby Nebo for a classic Umkomaas wreck double.
Wie sie sank: Struck Aliwal Shoal in heavy seas and foundered, 11 August 1974.
Heute dort tauchen
Bedingung: Heavily broken; recognizable bow, machinery and plating fields with new collapses after big swells
Wrackinnenraum-Tauchen: Limited. Overhangs and short tunnels through the collapsed structure exist; the steel is unstable and surge-loaded, so keep passes brief and trained. Das Betreten von Überkopf-Umgebungen erfordert eine spezifische Ausbildung – mindestens ein Wrack-Zertifikat, für die vollständige Penetration eine technische Wrack-Ausbildung.
Empfohlene Zertifizierung: Advanced Open Water
Strömung: Moderate · Sichtweite: 8–25 m
Meeresleben: Resident giant brindle bass, dense harlequin goldies, potato bass, seasonal ragged-tooth sharks, kingfish and baitballs over the wreckage.
Gefahren: Surge, current, sharp unstable plating, and boat traffic in season
