SS Dunraven
Het verhaal
Dunraven belonged to the awkward, fascinating generation of ships built with both a steam engine and a full set of sails, hedging against the unreliability of early machinery. Launched in Newcastle in 1873, she worked the Britain–India run through the newly opened Suez Canal. Homeward bound from Bombay in April 1876 with a cargo that included cotton and wool, her officers misjudged their position off the southern tip of Sinai and drove her onto the reef at Sha'ab Mahmoud near Beacon Rock. She hung on the coral, flooded, capsized, and went down; the crew got away and survived. The wreck lay forgotten for a century until divers found the upturned hull in the 1970s, and a television documentary soon puzzled out her identity. She now rests as one of the Red Sea's oldest divable shipwrecks, a Victorian iron shell turned inside-out reef.
Hoe ze zonk: Struck the reef at Sha'ab Mahmoud after a navigational error, 25 April 1876.

Conditie: The iron hull holds its inverted shape well after nearly 150 years, heavily crusted in hard coral, though the midships break continues to open slowly.
Penetratieduiken: Limited. The hull is split, so divers pass through the open interior between the breaks with daylight usually in view; the enclosed bow warrants wreck training. Het betreden van elke overhead-omgeving vereist specifieke training — minimaal een wrakduikcertificaat, technische wraktraining voor volledige penetratie.
Aanbevolen certificering: Advanced Open Water
Stroming: Mild · Zicht: 15–30 m
Zeeleven: Dense clouds of glassfish fill the inverted hull, with scorpionfish, morays, and nudibranchs along the plating and anthias streaming over the propeller and rudder.
Gevaren: Mild current along the reef; disturbed silt inside the hull; fire coral on the shallow sections.
Bescherming & wetgeving
