SS President Coolidge
Die Geschichte dahinter
The Coolidge was the pride of the Dollar Line's trans-Pacific service — a 200-meter liner of chandeliers, mosaic fountains, and first-class smoking rooms — until the war repainted her gray and packed her with soldiers. On 26 October 1942 she arrived at Espiritu Santo carrying more than 5,000 troops for the Guadalcanal campaign. Unwarned about the minefield guarding Segond Channel, she took two mines, and her captain drove her onto the reef so the men could walk off. In ninety minutes the evacuation saved all but two: a fireman killed by the first blast, and Captain Elwood Euart of the field artillery, who went back inside for sick men and could not get out — his remains were recovered and repatriated decades later. The ship slid down the slope and settled on her port side, where she remains the world's most accessible giant wreck: a shore entry onto a liner, promenade decks, guns, jeeps, helmets, and the porcelain 'Lady' still presiding over the dark.
Wie sie sank: Struck two American defensive mines entering Segond Channel on 26 October 1942 and was run aground; she slid off and sank.

Bedingung: Intact enough to read as a liner from stem to stern, though cyclones and gravity are slowly folding the amidships superstructure; guides adjust routes year by year.
Wrackinnenraum-Tauchen: Full With Training. Interior routes from the cargo holds to the Lady and beyond are led by Santo's guides at escalating depth and commitment; deep penetrations are decompression dives in silt-dark spaces. Das Betreten von Überkopf-Umgebungen erfordert eine spezifische Ausbildung – mindestens ein Wrack-Zertifikat, für die vollständige Penetration eine technische Wrack-Ausbildung.
Empfohlene Zertifizierung: Advanced Open Water; technical training for the deeper interior
Strömung: Mild · Sichtweite: 10–25 m
Meeresleben: Lionfish drift the promenade, flashlight fish blink in the black holds on night dives, coral trout and barracuda work the guns, and reef fish crowd the shallow bow.
Gefahren: Depth accumulates fast on a hull that starts at 20 m and falls away; interior silt, cable runs, and the temptation of one deck further.
Schutz & Recht
Protected under Vanuatu law; the wreck is dived with licensed local guides and artifact removal is prohibited.
Generations of divers have left the china, brass, and helmets in place — the wreck's magic depends on it.
