Superior Producer

Bound for Margarita Island with a hold and deck stacked high with clothing and Christmas trade goods, the Superior Producer left Willemstad into stiff seas in September 1977 riding dangerously low. Within sight of the harbor mouth her cargo shifted, she took on water and went down, settling upright on sand in about 33 meters almost beneath the modern cruise-ship Mega Pier. For weeks afterward, wet blue jeans and merchandise washed ashore and, as Curaçaoans still tell it, half the island dressed for free that Christmas. What the sea kept it improved: four decades on, the wheelhouse and hull rails wear a dense shag of orange cup corals that make this one of the Caribbean's most photogenic deep wrecks, especially at dusk when the polyps open. She is a serious dive despite sitting a short swim from shore — deep, sometimes current-swept, and closed entirely whenever cruise ships occupy the adjacent pier — but on a clear morning the intact silhouette rising from the sand is one of Curaçao's defining underwater sights.

How she sank: Capsized and sank just outside Willemstad harbor after her overloaded cargo shifted in rough seas, 30 September 1977.

Condition: Upright and intact, wheelhouse standing; one of the better-preserved genuine sinkings in the southern Caribbean

Penetration: Limited. The wheelhouse and forward holds are open and commonly entered by trained divers; the lower interior is dark, silty and best left to wreck-certified teams. Entering any overhead environment requires specific training — a wreck certification at minimum, technical wreck training for full penetration.

Marine life: Orange cup corals sheath the railings and wheelhouse, French angelfish and rock beauties work the hull, barracuda hover off the mast, and green morays den in the holds.

Hazards: Depth for the full tour, boat traffic near the harbor mouth, and mandatory closures when cruise ships are berthed overhead

Diving is prohibited whenever a cruise ship lies at the adjacent Mega Pier — operators schedule around ship calls.
