Cave diving in Norway

1 cave systems3 entrances and sites2 providers

Norwegian cave diving is concentrated in Nordland, where cold river caves such as Pluragrotta in Plurdalen near Mo i Rana are the main destinations for technical cave divers. Water is close to freezing for much of the year and visibility is often exceptional outside the spring snowmelt.

How access works

No national permit system for cave diving was found in the sources opened. The national association Norsk Grottedykkerforbund (NGDF) maintains guidelines and publishes guidance (for example limiting divers without cave training to the open pool and lined cavern zone at Plura). Police can close sites after accidents: the Helgeland police banned access to the Plura caves after the February 2014 accident and lifted the ban on 31 March 2014. A commercial dive centre operates beside the Plura entrance.
