Cavern & Cave Diving

The staged path into overhead environments: cavern training within the daylight zone, then intro-to-cave and full cave ratings built on guidelines, gas rules, and absolute discipline.

最低年齢
18
水深制限
21 m / 69 ft
典型的な所要時間
2-3 for cavern; a week or more for full cave
前提条件
Advanced-level certification and commonly 18+, with steeper experience requirements at each stage; technical or sidemount training commonly precedes full cave. Requirements vary by agency.

同等認定: PADI Cavern Diver / TDI Cavern, Intro to Cave and Full Cave / GUE Cave 1 and 2 / NSS-CDS and IANTD cave programs

Nothing in diving is less forgiving than a ceiling. In a cave, the surface is not up - it is back along a line, through passages that silt can erase from view in seconds - and the sport's history is blunt about what happens to untrained divers who wander in anyway. Cave training exists as a staged ladder precisely so that no one takes that environment on trust, and its first rule is carved into signage at cave mouths across Florida and Mexico: without training, do not go past the light.

The ladder starts with cavern. A cavern course - two to three days, typically four dives - keeps you inside the daylight zone, conventionally within about 40 m of linear distance from the surface and no deeper than about 21 m, with the exit visible as a glow throughout. Within that envelope it teaches the grammar of overhead diving: running a continuous guideline from open water, tie-offs and line following by sight and by touch, air-sharing along a line, anti-silting propulsion - frog kicks, pulls, and glides that leave the floor undisturbed - and gas planning on the rule of thirds, one third in, one third out, one third in reserve. Lights, redundancy, and communication conventions all enter here too.

Beyond cavern, the path forks by agency but keeps its shape: an intro-to-cave stage limited to the mainline and simple penetration, then full cave, where complex navigation - jumps, gaps, circuits - restricted passages, and decompression enter. The cave-dedicated organizations - TDI, IANTD, NSS-CDS, GUE with its Cave 1 and 2 - and the recreational agencies' cavern programs cover this ground with differing structures, and standards vary meaningfully between them; expect minimum age 18, an advanced-level certification, and increasingly steep experience requirements at each stage. Sidemount and backmounted doubles are both standard configurations, and many divers arrive with technical training already logged.

Time and money scale with commitment. Cavern alone runs roughly US$350-700. The full progression to cave diver, typically a week or more of training across stages, commonly totals somewhere in the US$1,500-3,000 range plus equipment, travel, and the site fees the great cave regions charge. The classrooms are worth the trip in themselves: the cenotes of Mexico's Yucatán, the springs of north Florida, and systems in France, Spain, and Australia are the sport's storied campuses.

Why divers accept all this ceremony is what the training protects: flooded passages of astonishing beauty - sculpted limestone, haloclines that bend light, fossil beds, chambers no daylight has ever touched - in water that is often the clearest on the planet. Cave divers describe a stillness nothing else in the sport offers. The honest closing note is the one every cave instructor repeats: the environment does not grade on effort, the rules exist because each one marks an accident that already happened, and the difference between a cave dive and a tragedy is training, equipment, and the humility to turn the dive the moment the plan says so.
