Divemaster

The first professional rating: leadership training that qualifies you to guide certified divers, assist instructors, and work in the dive industry. A serious commitment of weeks, not days.

최소 연령
18
일반적인 소요 시간
2-8 weeks
전제 조건
Rescue-level certification, current first aid and CPR, a physician-signed dive medical, and a logged-dive history (commonly about 40 dives to start, 60 to certify; agency minimums vary).

동급 교육 기관: PADI Divemaster / SSI Divemaster (Dive Guide + Science of Diving) / NAUI Divemaster / RAID Divemaster

Divemaster is where diving stops being a hobby with a card and becomes a profession with responsibilities. The rating - called Divemaster by most agencies, with SSI reaching it through its Dive Guide and Science of Diving pathway - qualifies you to lead certified divers, assist instructors with students, run briefings, and take paid work in dive operations. It is also, for most people who earn it, the hardest and most transformative course on the recreational side of the sport.

Entry requirements are consistent in outline across agencies: minimum age 18, a rescue-level certification, current first-aid and CPR training, a physician-signed dive medical, and a logged-dive history - commonly around 40 dives to begin training and 60 to certify, with some agencies requiring more. Those numbers are floors, not targets. Candidates who arrive with a hundred varied dives get far more from the training than those who scrape in at the minimum.

The curriculum has three strands. Theory goes deeper than anything earlier: dive physics, physiology, decompression theory, equipment, and the supervision standards you will work under. Watermanship gets tested and scored - timed swims, a tow, treading, and an equipment exchange exercise that is famous for a reason. Then comes the practical core: mapping a site, briefing it, leading dives, managing groups of real divers with real problems, assisting on courses, and learning the unglamorous logistics of cylinders, compressors, boats, and paperwork that keep a dive operation running.

Formats differ more than for any other course. A structured program at a training-focused shop might run two to four intensive weeks. Internships stretch the same content over one to three months, trading your labor for reduced fees - an arrangement that can be excellent or exploitative depending on the shop, so ask precisely what you will be doing, how often you will dive, and who will mentor you. Course fees commonly land in the region of US$600-1,500, but budget honestly: materials, the medical, equipment you are expected to own, and the annual professional membership fee every agency charges thereafter all sit on top. Standards and costs vary by agency and region.

Be equally honest about what the job is. Working divemasters guide, teach-assist, fill tanks, fix small problems, and manage people - some anxious, some overconfident - for wages that in most of the world are modest. The rating rewards those who genuinely like looking after other divers. Plenty of certified divemasters never work a day and took the course purely to become excellent, self-sufficient divers; that is a legitimate reason and a common one.

The natural next step for those continuing up is instructor training, for which divemaster is the universal prerequisite. For everyone else, the card marks the point where a dive operation can trust you with other people's diving - and where, on any boat anywhere, you become one of the people quietly watching everyone else's bubbles.
