Drift Diver Specialty

Technique for diving in current: negative entries, group cohesion, surface-marker deployment, and the boat procedures that make moving water a ride instead of a hazard.

Idade mínima
12
Duração típica
1
Pré-requisito
Open Water Diver (or equivalent); comfortable buoyancy control recommended before adding current.

Equivalências de agência: PADI Drift Diver / SSI Waves, Tides & Currents; NAUI and RAID cover drift technique in comparable electives

Some of the finest diving on earth happens in moving water. Currents carry food, food gathers fish, and fish gather everything that eats them - which is why the channels of Palau and the Maldives, the walls of Cozumel, and the passes of French Polynesia all run on the same engine. Drift diving is how divers use that engine: instead of fighting the flow, you enter up-current, fly with it, and surface wherever it delivers you, with a boat following your bubbles or your marker. Done well it is the most effortless diving there is. Done badly it separates buddies, exhausts swimmers, and scatters a group across open sea, and the drift specialty exists to keep you in the first category.

The course typically runs two dives over a day, wrapped in more briefing than usual because procedure is the substance. You learn how currents behave - tidal versus standing flows, how walls and points accelerate water, down-currents and where they lurk, and how to read the surface and site plan before anyone gets wet. Entries get crisper: on strong-current sites that means the negative entry, rolling in with an empty BCD and descending immediately as a group, because a minute spent floating on the surface is a hundred meters of separation. In the water the skills are cohesion and control - staying level with your buddy and guide, using the bottom's shelter to pause, never kicking against what cannot be out-kicked, and keeping streamlined so the current works for you.

The defining skill is the delayed surface marker buoy. Deploying a DSMB from depth on a spool - without fouling yourself, without losing buoyancy control - is what tells the boat where you are before you surface, and no drift-heavy destination treats it as optional. The course drills it until it is calm routine, along with safety stops in blue water away from any reference and the surface discipline of staying grouped until pickup. Reef hooks, where parks permit them, get honest coverage: how to use one at a current point without damaging the bottom, and where they are banned.

Prerequisites are an entry-level certification with most agencies and a minimum age commonly 12; expect to pay roughly US$150-300 depending on region. Standards vary by agency - SSI teaches the material within its Waves, Tides & Currents specialty, and some agencies fold drift procedure into advanced or navigation training rather than naming a separate course.

Take it before the trip that needs it, not during. The famous current destinations assume competence on day one, and several of the world's best sites - the ones where sharks stack up in the flow - are simply unavailable to divers who cannot hold position in a group or send up a marker. For traveling divers this is among the most practical specialties in the catalog: a modest day of training that unlocks a disproportionate share of the world's greatest dives.
