A drysuit is the key that unlocks half the planet's diving. Below roughly 15 °C, wetsuits stop being comfortable and start being a countdown timer; a drysuit - a waterproof shell sealed at neck and wrists, worn over insulating undergarments - removes the timer entirely. Kelp forests, cold-water wrecks, high-latitude walls, quarry training in winter, and the long repetitive days that cold destinations demand all become ordinary. The catch is that a drysuit is not just warmer clothing: it is a second buoyancy system worn on your body, and it needs to be taught.

That is the heart of the course. Air must be added to the suit on descent - via a chest inflator valve - to prevent squeeze, and vented on ascent through a shoulder exhaust before it expands enough to take control of your dive. You learn to manage two air spaces instead of one, deciding how much buoyancy lives in the suit versus the BCD, and to keep the suit's bubble where it belongs. The signature drill is the inverted recovery: if air migrates to your feet - it happens to everyone eventually - you practice tucking, rolling, and venting before the situation becomes an ascent. Add valve failures, seal awareness, and the fine motor work of diving in thicker gloves, and the two-dive format earns its keep.

Weighting changes substantially, and the course rebuilds yours from scratch. Undergarments trap far more air than neoprene, so drysuit divers carry noticeably more lead, positioned carefully for trim; a proper check at the surface and again at the end of a dive with a near-empty cylinder is part of the training. Instructors also cover suit types - membrane shells with separate undergarments versus inherently insulating neoprene suits - plus seal materials, valve care, and the daily discipline of zipper waxing and talc that keeps an expensive suit alive.

Logistics are friendly. Prerequisites are an entry-level certification, minimum age commonly 10 with some agencies setting it higher, and the course typically runs one to two days with a confined session plus two open-water dives. Cost lands around US$200-450, and courses at cold-water shops usually include suit rental - worth choosing deliberately, since this is the rare course where trying the equipment before buying matters enormously. Standards vary by agency and region, and a handful of operators accept logged drysuit experience in place of the card; formal training remains the norm and the safer route.

Who needs it: anyone whose home diving is temperate, anyone drawn to the cold-water icons - Scapa Flow, British Columbia, Iceland's tectonic fissures, the Baltic's preserved wrecks - and warm-water divers adding shoulder-season trips. Technical divers adopt drysuits almost universally, both for long decompression hangs and as redundant buoyancy, so the specialty is quiet groundwork for that path too. It is a modest day of training that converts winter from off-season into just another set of conditions, and few cards on the specialty shelf change a diver's year as thoroughly.
