Enriched Air Nitrox

The most popular specialty in diving: a short, mostly classroom course on breathing oxygen-enriched air to extend no-decompression time, and on managing the oxygen exposure that comes with it.

Open Water Diver (or equivalent). No dives required by most agencies; optional training dives are offered by some.

Enriched air nitrox is ordinary breathing gas with extra oxygen - most commonly 32 or 36 percent instead of air's 21 - and the certification to use it is the most-taken specialty in diving. The logic is simple: less nitrogen in the mix means less nitrogen dissolving into your body, which means longer no-decompression limits in the depth band where most diving happens. On repetitive days - a liveaboard week, a two-tank-morning routine - the difference between air and nitrox limits is the difference between watching your computer and watching the reef.

The course exists because the benefit carries a cost that must be managed. Oxygen becomes toxic under pressure, so every nitrox mix has a maximum operating depth: about 34 m for 32 percent and about 29 m for 36 percent at the widely used exposure ceiling. Exceeding it risks convulsion underwater, which is why the training centers on three habits - personally analyzing your cylinder's oxygen content before every dive, labeling it, and setting your dive computer to match. You learn the underlying math, the exposure tracking, and the fill-station procedures, and then those three habits get drilled until they are reflex.

Format is famously light. Most agencies require no dives at all - the course can be completed in a classroom or online in an afternoon, with optional dives if you want supervised practice - which is why so many divers fold it into an Open Water or Advanced package. Minimum age is commonly 12, the only prerequisite is an entry-level certification, and pricing typically runs around US$150-300 including materials, with fills costing a few dollars more than air thereafter. Standards vary a little by agency and region, particularly around maximum oxygen fractions covered.

Clearing up the folklore is part of the course's value. Nitrox does not let you dive deeper - the opposite: its depth ceiling is stricter than air's. It does not meaningfully change how fast you use gas, and it does not reduce narcosis. Many divers swear they feel less tired after nitrox days; the scientific evidence for that is mixed, and honest instructors say so. What is not folklore is the margin argument: dived on air-equivalent schedules, nitrox leaves you further from your limits, which many divers treat as a conservatism buffer rather than extra bottom time.

Who should take it? Almost everyone who plans to keep diving. It is cheap, quick, and immediately useful at the 15-30 m depths where the world's reefs and wrecks concentrate, and liveaboards increasingly assume it - many include free nitrox and pitch their schedules around it. The certification is also the doorway to further gas training: deep diving pairs naturally with it, and every technical pathway assumes it. If you take only one specialty after your entry-level course, this is the conventional choice, and the convention is right.
