Freediving is the other way down: no tank, no bubbles, one breath, and a version of the ocean that behaves differently around a silent visitor. An entry-level freediver course exists because the sport's central skill - being relaxed while your body argues for air - is trainable, and because its safety rules are absolute in a way scuba's are not. The course's first and last lesson is the same sentence: never freedive alone, and never without a trained buddy watching every dive.

Training splits into three rooms. In the classroom you learn the physiology that makes freediving possible: the mammalian dive response that slows your heart in water, why the urge to breathe tracks rising carbon dioxide rather than falling oxygen, how blood shifts protect the lungs at depth, and the two blackout risks - and why hyperventilating before a dive, the old folk technique, is dangerous and prohibited. In confined water you practice static apnea, relaxing through the first contractions of a breath-hold, and dynamic swims for technique. In open water you take it vertical along a line: duck dives, equalizing early and often, streamlined descents, and the buddy protocols - one up, one down, eye contact through the last meters of every ascent, and the rescue skills for a diver who needs help at the surface.

Typical entry benchmarks give the course its shape without being its point: static holds around 90 seconds to two minutes, dynamic swims of roughly 25-40 m, and open-water depths in the 10-20 m range, varying by agency - PADI's Freediver course works to about 16 m, AIDA's second-level course somewhat deeper. Most students are startled by how quickly relaxed technique outperforms effort. Minimum age is commonly 15, with junior variants at some agencies; the only prerequisites are swimming competence and the standard medical screening. Ears matter more than lungs at this level: equalization that is optional-feeling on scuba is constant on a fast free descent, and the course teaches the gentler techniques the sport depends on.

Courses run two to three days and typically cost around US$250-500 depending on region. Equipment is minimal and usually included: long freediving fins, a low-volume mask, a simple weight belt worn light. The certification community is broader than scuba's big names - alongside PADI and SSI sit dedicated freediving agencies such as AIDA and Molchanovs, whose curricula are widely respected - and standards vary by agency and region in depth targets and performance requirements more than in safety doctrine, which is uniform.

Who it suits: snorkelers who keep diving down and wishing they could stay, scuba divers curious about the quieter discipline - many report their gas consumption and calm improve on scuba afterward - surfers and spearfishing-curious swimmers wanting formal safety training, and travelers headed for places where a breath-hold is the local way in. What comes next inside freediving is deeper training with the same agencies; what comes immediately is practice, always with a buddy, always within the limits the card actually certifies.
