Dive Instructor

Instructor development and examination: the training that qualifies you to certify new divers, and the gateway to teaching careers from resort towns to local dive shops.

最低年龄
18
典型时长
10-14 plus a 2-day examination
前提条件
Divemaster or equivalent leadership rating, 18+, certified at least six months, physician-signed medical, current first-aid/CPR instructor training, and commonly about 60 logged dives to start (around 100 by examination).

同等认证机构: PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor / SSI Open Water Instructor / NAUI Instructor / RAID Open Water Instructor

Becoming a dive instructor means being trusted to take people who have never breathed underwater and certify them to do it without you. Every mainstream agency reaches that trust the same way: an instructor development program that teaches you to deliver the agency's system, followed by an evaluation - in the PADI system a two-day Instructor Examination run by staff examiners who were not your teachers. The separation of training from testing is deliberate, and it is why the qualification carries weight worldwide.

Prerequisites are broadly uniform: age 18, divemaster or equivalent leadership rating, certified as a diver for at least six months, a physician-signed medical, current first-aid instructor training or its completion during the program, and a logged-dive count that commonly sits around 60 to begin and 100 by examination. The development course itself typically runs ten days to two weeks full time, often split into an assistant-instructor phase and an instructor phase, and many candidates add preparation days for theory - the physics and physiology exams sink more candidates than the teaching demonstrations do.

The content is teaching, not diving. You learn to present knowledge in briefings and classrooms, to demonstrate skills at exaggerated, learnable speed, to spot and correct student problems in confined water, to manage groups in open water where real risk lives, and to apply standards - the written rules about ratios, depths, sequences, and supervision that define what you may and may not do. Marketing, risk management, and paperwork get their unglamorous due, because instructors operate inside legal systems as well as oceans.

Cost deserves clear eyes. Between the course, examination fees, materials, application fees, and the first year of professional membership and insurance, most candidates spend roughly US$2,000-4,000 all-in, with regional variation and equipment on top. Salaried teaching jobs at busy resort destinations, liveaboards, and city dive shops absorb most new instructors; pay is famously modest at entry and improves with specialties, languages, and reputation. The lifestyle - teaching in warm water, watching someone's first breath underwater land - is the actual compensation, and for the right person it is considerable.

Progression continues past the entry rating. Specialty-instructor certifications let you teach nitrox, deep, wreck, and the rest; master-level teaching ratings recognize volume and breadth; staff-instructor and course-director tracks let you train other instructors. Crossovers between agencies are routine at this level - an experienced instructor from one system can qualify in another through an orientation program rather than starting over, which keeps the industry's teaching pool fluid.

One honest caution: teaching diving is supervisory work with genuine stakes, done tired, in salt water, on schedules built around weather and boats. The best instructors are the ones who still find student number four hundred as interesting as student number one. If that sounds like you, few qualifications convert passion into a working life anywhere on earth quite so directly. Requirements and program names vary by agency and region.
