Organisme de formation

NAUI (National Association of Underwater Instructors)

One of the oldest recreational training agencies, founded in 1960 in the United States, with a not-for-profit heritage, an educator-led philosophy, and deep roots in academic and scientific diving.

NAUI - the National Association of Underwater Instructors - is the elder statesman of the major training agencies. Organized in 1960 by Al Tillman and Neal Hess, growing out of the first efforts to professionalize instructor certification in the United States, it predates every other large agency now operating and has spent six decades with the same core identity: a not-for-profit association of educators, run for its members, with the motto of dive safety through education.

The teaching philosophy is NAUI's clearest fingerprint. Where the largest agencies standardize tightly, NAUI grants its instructors what it calls academic freedom: within the association's minimum standards, an instructor may add depth, extend training, and raise requirements as their judgment and local conditions demand. The result, in practice, is a system where courses can be noticeably more thorough than industry minimums - a tradition NAUI's partisans regard as the point, and one that historically made the agency a favorite of universities, scientific diving programs, and institutions that wanted divers trained past the floor. Skin-diving skills, watermanship, and rescue emphasis run deeper through the recreational curriculum than is now common elsewhere.

The catalog covers the standard ladder under NAUI's own names - Scuba Diver at entry level, Advanced Scuba Diver, Rescue Scuba Diver, a specialty shelf, and the professional track through Divemaster and Instructor - alongside technical programs and youth training. The association's institutional reach is a point of quiet pride: NAUI training has served university programs, public-safety teams, and NASA's Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory, where astronauts rehearse spacewalks underwater, and its alumni thread through the history of American diving.

Geographically NAUI is strongest in North America, with meaningful presence in parts of Asia - Japan and South Korea notably - and pockets worldwide, though its international resort-town footprint is smaller than PADI's or SSI's. A traveling NAUI diver will occasionally meet a resort clerk who sees the card rarely; the moment passes, because recognition is not actually in question.

On that recognition: NAUI participates in the same World Recreational Scuba Training Council and ISO standards ecosystem as the other mainstream agencies, its certifications are accepted by dive operators globally, and equivalency into other agencies' continuing education is routine - a NAUI Scuba Diver enrolls in another agency's advanced course exactly as its own graduates do. Professional crossovers run in both directions through established processes. Cards do not expire.

Choosing NAUI today usually means choosing a particular instructor or shop whose thoroughness appeals, or an institution - a university program, a scientific diving course - that has used the association for decades. The trade-offs are honest ones: fewer storefronts in vacation destinations, in exchange for a tradition that treats minimum standards as a floor to build on rather than a finish line. For students who want their training unhurried and their instructor empowered to demand more, that tradition is the draw.
