Two to three guided dives after dark: light handling and signals, close navigation, and the changed cast of marine life that only appears once the sun goes down.

The reef does not sleep; it changes shift. Parrotfish spin mucus cocoons in crevices, hunting morays swim free, octopus and cuttlefish come out to work, crustaceans blanket surfaces that looked bare at noon, and in a handful of lucky places bioluminescence turns every fin stroke into sparks. Night diving is the cheapest transformation in the sport - the same site becomes a different site - and the night specialty exists because operating in darkness asks for technique that daylight never teaches.

The course typically runs two to three dives over one or two evenings. The first lessons are about light: carrying a primary and a backup, keeping the beam out of other divers' eyes, and learning the signal conventions - circling the beam for attention or an OK, the deliberate side-to-side sweep that means something is wrong, and the discipline of never pointing a light upward at a boat that might read it as distress. You learn to run a compass pattern when the visual references are gone, to navigate by small landmarks inside your beam, to control buoyancy by gauge and feel rather than horizon, and to manage the entries, exits, and surface marking that keep a group together in the dark. Instructors also teach the quiet skills: covering your light against your body to let your eyes adapt, watching the plankton glow, and moving slowly enough that the night shift carries on around you.

Anxiety is part of the syllabus, honestly handled. Most divers feel a flicker of it on their first descent into black water, and the course is structured to convert that flicker into routine - familiar site, thorough briefing, close supervision, shallow-to-moderate depths. Many instructors run the first dive at dusk so darkness arrives during the dive rather than before it, which is the gentlest introduction the sport has invented.

Prerequisites are light: an entry-level certification, minimum age commonly 12. Training depths stay well inside your existing qualification - the card certifies a skill set, not a new depth. Expect roughly US$150-350 depending on region, usually including light rental, over one to two days. Standards vary by agency and region; SSI folds limited-visibility technique into the same course, which suits divers in green-water regions where daytime can feel like dusk anyway.

The specialty pairs beautifully with navigation training - the two share half their skills - and feeds directly into some of diving's signature experiences: fluorescence dives under blue light, black-water drifts over deep ocean, manta and shark night dives at famous sites, and the simple habit of ending a dive day with one more tank after sunset. It suits photographers hunting subjects that never appear by day, and any diver whose home site has gone slightly stale. Few certifications deliver as much new diving per dollar: the world's dive map does not grow, but every site on it doubles.
