Open Water Diver

The world's entry-level scuba certification: theory, confined-water training, and four open-water dives that qualify you to dive with a buddy, without a professional, to around 18 m.

No prior certification. Watermanship check (commonly a 200 m swim or 300 m mask-snorkel-fins swim plus a 10-minute float) and a medical screening questionnaire; a physician's clearance may be required for some conditions.

Open Water Diver is the certification that turns a curious swimmer into an autonomous diver. Once certified, you can rent equipment, get cylinders filled, and plan dives with a buddy anywhere in the world without a professional in the water - within the limits of your training and experience. Every mainstream agency issues a version of it, the cards never expire, and dive operators on every continent recognize them interchangeably.

The course has three parts. Knowledge development covers the physics and physiology that matter underwater: pressure and equalization, air consumption, nitrogen absorption and no-decompression limits, and how to plan a dive. Confined-water sessions in a pool or pool-like sea build the hands: clearing a flooded mask, recovering a lost regulator, sharing air, controlling buoyancy, and managing weights and gear. Then come the checkout dives - most agencies require four over at least two days - where you repeat the skills in the real ocean or lake and finish each dive actually diving.

The headline number is 18 m. That is the maximum depth most agencies attach to the certification as commonly taught, though conventions differ: a few programs, including RAID's Open Water 20, BSAC's Ocean Diver, and CMAS one-star, use 20 m. Juniors can usually start at age 10, with shallower limits and adult-supervision rules that relax in stages through the mid-teens. Expect a watermanship check on the first day - commonly a 200 m continuous swim, or 300 m with mask, snorkel, and fins, plus about ten minutes of floating or treading - and the standard medical questionnaire, which may require a physician's clearance. Details vary by agency and region.

Formats range from intensive three-to-five-day courses at resort destinations to weekend programs stretched over several weeks at home. Nearly every agency now front-loads the theory online, which shortens in-water time. A useful hybrid is the referral: complete theory and pool work with a local shop, then do the four checkout dives with an affiliated operator somewhere warm. It saves vacation days for actual diving.

Cost is a wide band. In much of Southeast Asia the full course commonly runs around US$250-400; in North America, Europe, and Australia, US$400-700 is more typical once materials and certification fees are counted. Equipment use is normally included. Extremely cheap courses sometimes mean large groups and rushed skills, so ask about class size and how many days you will actually spend in the water before choosing on price alone.

What comes next depends on what caught you. The Advanced Open Water progression extends your depth range and supervised experience; Enriched Air Nitrox is a short, mostly dry course many divers add immediately; and buoyancy-focused training pays off faster than any piece of equipment. The single best thing a new Open Water diver can do, though, is simply dive - soon, and repeatedly. Skills learned over four days fade quickly if the certification card spends a year in a drawer, and most operators offer cheap, easy guided diving that turns a fresh card into real competence.
