Emergency Oxygen Provider

A half-day, no-prerequisite course on recognizing dive injuries and delivering emergency oxygen - the single most useful first-response skill a diver or dive companion can carry.

典型时长
0.5
前提条件
None - open to divers and non-divers alike; pairing with current CPR and first-aid training is strongly recommended.

同等认证机构: PADI Emergency Oxygen Provider / DAN Emergency Oxygen for Scuba Diving Injuries / SSI React Right (oxygen module) / comparable NAUI and RAID first-response programs

Emergency oxygen is the first-aid backbone of diving. For decompression sickness and lung overexpansion injuries, breathing the highest possible concentration of oxygen as early as possible is the standard first response taught throughout the dive industry - it supports injured tissue and buys time on the way to professional care - and yet the green cylinder on the boat helps no one unless somebody aboard actually knows how to use it. The oxygen-provider course exists to make sure that somebody is you.

The course is short, practical, and open to almost everyone: typically half a day, no diving prerequisite, no in-water work, and versions from DAN, PADI, SSI, and the first-aid arms of other agencies that differ mainly in packaging. You learn to recognize what oxygen is for - the joint pain, unusual fatigue, numbness, rash, weakness, dizziness, or breathing trouble that can follow a dive, sometimes deceptively late and deceptively mild - and the golden rule attached: when in doubt, deliver oxygen and call for help, because providing it to someone who turns out not to need it causes no harm, while hesitating can.

Hands-on time is the heart of it. You assemble and disassemble a kit until it is familiar: cylinder, regulator, and the delivery choices - a demand valve that gives near-pure oxygen to a breathing, responsive diver; a non-rebreather mask run on constant flow; and ventilation options for a diver who is not breathing, folded together with CPR skills you are encouraged to hold current alongside. You practice flow rates, mask seals, switching between casualties and methods, and the arithmetic of how long a cylinder will last - which teaches the sobering lesson that most boat kits carry less oxygen than a long evacuation wants, and why activating emergency services and the diver-emergency network early matters more than any single skill. Courses teach the call sequence plainly: local EMS first, then DAN or the regional diver hotline for specialist guidance on care and recompression options.

Cost typically runs US$100-200, and the certification pairs naturally with rescue training - many divers take the two together, and dive professionals are expected to hold both. Refresher training every couple of years is the honest recommendation, since these are skills used rarely and needed suddenly. Standards vary slightly by agency and region in kit details and recommended flow rates; the doctrine does not.

Who should take it: anyone who dives beyond arm's reach of professional help, which is nearly everyone - liveaboard guests, buddy pairs who dive from their own boat or shore, dive-club members, and the non-diving partners and parents who wait topside and would otherwise wait helplessly. Remote-destination travelers should treat it as essential kit. It is diving's least glamorous certification and, per hour and dollar, quite possibly its most valuable: a small course that converts a bystander into the person a stricken diver needed on the worst day of their diving life.
