Intro to Rebreathers

Unit-specific training on closed-circuit rebreathers: how the loop, scrubber, and oxygen sensors work, the checklist culture that keeps them safe, and silent, bubble-free diving.

Minimum yaş
18
Tipik süre
3-5
Ön koşul
Commonly 18+, entry or advanced certification plus nitrox, and a logged-dive history; training and certification are specific to the rebreather model used. Requirements vary by agency and unit.

A rebreather does something open-circuit scuba never can: it gives you your breath back. Exhaled gas is not vented but recirculated - carbon dioxide chemically scrubbed out, oxygen metered back in - so a closed-circuit rebreather (CCR) releases almost no bubbles, extends a small gas supply across hours, and holds an optimal oxygen level at every depth. The practical results are legendary: silence that lets wildlife treat you as furniture, warm moist breathing gas, and efficiency that transformed deep and expedition diving. The cost is complexity, and rebreather training exists because that complexity must be respected in a way a simple regulator never demands.

Entry-level CCR courses are unit-specific - you certify on a particular model, not on rebreathers in general - and typically run three to five days. The classroom covers the machine: loop and counterlungs, scrubber chemistry and duration, the oxygen sensors and electronics that hold setpoint, diluent, and the failure modes that matter, above all the danger of too little oxygen, too much oxygen, or unscrubbed carbon dioxide, none of which announce themselves reliably. Practical training builds the culture that keeps CCR divers alive: written pre-dive checklists completed every time without exception, constant monitoring of oxygen readings, and drills - flushes, manual control, and bailout to open circuit - rehearsed until reflexive. Entry certifications commonly restrict divers to no-decompression diving with depth limits in the 18-30 m range depending on agency and unit, with progression to deeper and decompression CCR diving as separate courses.

Prerequisites commonly include age 18, an entry or advanced certification plus nitrox, and a modest logged-dive history; recreational-oriented programs from PADI and SSI sit alongside technical tracks from TDI, IANTD, and RAID - an agency that began life focused on rebreather training. Standards vary by agency, unit, and region more than in any other corner of diving, so treat specifics as the manufacturer's and agency's to state.

Money deserves plain words. Training typically runs US$1,000-2,000 including unit rental, and the machines themselves are a serious purchase - commonly several thousand US dollars secondhand to five figures new, plus consumables every dive: scrubber absorbent, oxygen fills, and sensor replacements on a calendar. Ongoing servicing is not optional. For divers logging long, deep, or wildlife-critical dives regularly, the economics can genuinely work; for occasional vacation divers they usually do not, and honest instructors say so.

Who belongs on the loop: photographers and shark-and-cetacean specialists who need silence, technical divers whose depth and duration goals make open-circuit gas logistics absurd, expedition and cave divers, and meticulous personalities who find checklists satisfying rather than tedious - the trait rebreather diving quietly selects for. Who should wait: divers still consolidating buoyancy and basic skills, and anyone unwilling to maintain currency, because rusty CCR habits are dangerous in ways rusty open-circuit habits are not. For the right diver the reward is the closest thing the sport offers to becoming part of the water.
