Sidemount Diver

Learn to carry cylinders at your sides instead of on your back: a cave-born configuration prized for redundancy, streamlining, easier logistics, and kindness to backs and shoulders.

Minimum yaş
15
Tipik süre

Ön koşul
Open Water Diver (or equivalent) with most agencies; solid buoyancy and trim strongly recommended.

Ajans eşdeğerleri: PADI Sidemount Diver / SSI Recreational Sidemount / TDI Sidemount / RAID Sidemount

Sidemount began as a cave-diving solution - explorers needed to pass low passages no back-mounted cylinder would fit through - and escaped into mainstream diving because its advantages turned out to be general. Instead of one tank on your spine, you clip a cylinder along each side of your torso, valves at your chest where you can see and reach them. The result is a flatter, more streamlined profile, genuinely redundant gas in two independent systems, valves and regulators in view instead of behind your head, and - the reason many divers convert - no heavy rig to shoulder on land. Cylinders go into the water separately and clip on there; backs, boats, and aging shoulders all approve.

The course is a genuine skills rebuild, which is why it runs longer than most specialties: typically two days with a confined-water session and around three open-water dives. Rigging comes first - a sidemount harness and wing, bungee loops, cylinder bands, and the fiddly, personal process of adjusting until tanks lie flat along your body rather than dangling. In the water you learn the configuration's core discipline: breathing both cylinders down in alternating stages to keep their buoyancy balanced, switching regulators on schedule, managing hoses cleanly, and monitoring two pressure gauges. Trim work is central, because sidemount rewards horizontal precision more than any recreational configuration, and instructors typically add valve drills and gas-sharing practice adapted to the layout.

Prerequisites are an entry-level certification with most agencies and a minimum age commonly 15, though several programs are pitched at advanced-level divers and the course lands far better with solid buoyancy already in place. Expect roughly US$300-500 over two days, with rental of the specialized harness usually included. Standards vary by agency and region, and recreational sidemount certifications cover the configuration only - cave and technical applications carry their own training with different gas rules.

Honesty about trade-offs keeps this specialty from being oversold. Sidemount adds setup time and thought: two cylinders to rig, more clips and bungees to tune, and a configuration many boat crews and rental counters are less familiar with, especially at resort destinations built around single-tank diving. Traveling with a full sidemount kit is light - the harness packs smaller than a jacket BCD - but sourcing two suitable cylinders with the right valves needs a call ahead. Divers who dive rarely may find the skills fade faster than back-mount habits do.

Who converts and stays converted: divers with back or shoulder trouble, small-framed divers for whom a heavy single tank is a genuine burden, photographers who want stability and reach, anyone headed toward cave or technical training - where sidemount is one of the standard doorways - and shore divers tired of surf entries under a tower of gear. For them the course is not a novelty but a permanent change of address, and most describe the same conversion moment: the first time they hover flat, tanks silent at their sides, and realize nothing is pulling them anywhere.
