TDI / SDI (Technical Diving International / Scuba Diving International)

Sister agencies under the International Training family: TDI, founded 1994, is one of the world's leading technical-diving training organizations; SDI is its recreational arm, known for computer-based teaching and the industry's best-known solo diving certification.

TDI and SDI are two faces of one Florida-based organization, International Training, and their order of birth explains their character. Technical Diving International came first, founded in 1994 by industry veteran Bret Gilliam to serve the then-young discipline of technical diving - mixed gases, staged decompression, overhead environments - and grew into one of the largest dedicated technical training organizations in the world. Scuba Diving International followed in the late 1990s as the recreational sister, built by technical educators asking what an entry-level system would look like designed from scratch. The family also includes ERDI, which trains public-safety dive teams, and PFI for freediving.

SDI's recreational philosophy carries two well-known signatures. It was an early mover in teaching new divers with dive computers as the primary planning tool rather than paper tables - a position that once counted as radical and has since become the industry's practical norm - and it certifies the sport's most widely recognized Solo Diver rating, a specialty (built on substantial experience prerequisites and redundant equipment) that acknowledges what photographers and dive professionals had long done quietly and wraps training around it. The recreational ladder otherwise runs familiarly from Open Water Scuba Diver through advanced, rescue, specialties, and professional ratings, with e-learning throughout.

TDI's catalog is the deeper shelf: nitrox and advanced nitrox, decompression procedures, extended range, trimix to full expedition depths, closed-circuit rebreather programs across many units, cave and cavern training with a strong Florida heritage, and gas blending and service courses for the people who keep technical diving supplied. For many divers worldwide, the TDI card is simply what their local technical instructor issues, and its course names - Intro to Tech, Decompression Procedures, Extended Range - are close to generic terms in the community.

Geographically the family is strongest in North America, with substantial networks across Europe, Asia, Australia, and the Middle East, typically through independent dive shops rather than resort chains; TDI's technical footprint reaches wherever technical diving happens, including the cave regions of Florida and Mexico and the wreck communities of the Great Lakes and northern Europe.

Recognition follows the industry's shared architecture. SDI is a participant in the World Recreational Scuba Training Council standards process and aligns with the relevant ISO standards, so its recreational certifications are accepted globally and interchange with other agencies' levels as prerequisites; TDI ratings are the common currency of technical diving and are honored by technical operators and fill stations worldwide. Crossovers for professionals run in both directions through defined processes, and divers routinely mix the family's cards with other agencies' - an SDI Open Water diver taking another agency's specialties, or a PADI recreational diver stepping into TDI for technical training - without friction.

Choosing the family usually means proximity to one of its shops or, at the technical level, choosing a specific mentor: technical training is an apprenticeship culture, and TDI's structure gives experienced instructors room to teach it that way.
