A try dive is the industry's open door: a supervised first experience of breathing underwater that requires no certification, no exam, and no commitment beyond a few hours. Agencies run it under different names - Discover Scuba Diving at PADI, Try Scuba at SSI, and similar labels elsewhere - but the format is broadly the same worldwide. A dive professional briefs you on the equipment, the sensations to expect, and a handful of hand signals, then takes you into calm, shallow water where the only real assignment is to breathe slowly, relax, and look around.

Sessions usually begin in a pool or a sandy-bottomed patch of protected sea. You practice two or three foundation skills, such as clearing water from your mask and recovering the regulator, and then swim under close supervision while the professional manages your buoyancy and stays within touching distance. Participant-to-professional ratios are kept deliberately tight. Open-water try dives are commonly capped at 12 m by agency standards, and in practice most happen between 6 and 10 m, where the light is warm and the fish life is at its busiest anyway.

The experience suits anyone undecided about committing to a full course: travelers with a spare morning, families introducing teenagers to the sport, snorkelers curious about what the reef looks like from inside, and nervous swimmers who want to test their comfort before spending real money. Be clear about what it is not. A try dive is not a license. You cannot rent equipment, buy air fills, or dive without a professional afterward, and you can repeat the experience as many times as you like without it ever converting to a certification on its own.

Age and health rules still apply. Several agencies run pool-only bubble programs for children from age 8, while open-water try dives generally start at age 10. Everyone completes the same medical screening questionnaire used for entry-level courses, and a yes answer may require a physician's sign-off before you get wet. Exact minimums, depth caps, and ratios vary by agency and region, so treat the numbers here as the common pattern rather than a universal rule.

Cost depends heavily on where you do it. A pool taster at a local dive shop often runs in the region of US$60-120, while a resort session that includes a boat trip and a real reef dive typically lands somewhere around US$100-200 with all equipment included. Paying a little more for a small group or one-to-one attention is usually money well spent on a first dive.

If the experience takes hold, the natural next step is the full Open Water course. Many agencies credit the skills and the dive itself toward that certification if you continue within a set window, often six months to a year, so it pays to do a try dive early in a trip rather than on the last day. Ask the shop before you book whether the credit applies, and log the dive either way - it is the first entry in what may become a long book.
