Advanced-level certification with most agencies; comfortable buoyancy and good trim strongly recommended before line work.

Wrecks concentrate everything divers love - history you can touch, artificial-reef marine life, dramatic structure - and a set of hazards that open reefs simply do not have. The wreck specialty exists to teach the difference between admiring a shipwreck and being endangered by one. Sharp, corroding metal cuts wetsuits and hands; nets and monofilament drape invisibly; decades of silt lie ready to erase visibility in one careless fin kick; and any passage with a ceiling removes the direct ascent to the surface that all mainstream recreational training assumes.

Course structure is broadly similar across agencies: typically four dives over two days on one or more real wrecks. The early dives cover assessment and navigation - researching a wreck's history and hazards, mapping it, orienting along a hull where the usual reef cues are gone, and moving with the trim and finning technique that leaves the silt where it lies. Later dives introduce line work: deploying a reel, tying off, and following a guideline, first outside the structure and then, in programs that permit it, on a limited penetration inside the light zone - the region where natural daylight and an unobstructed exit remain visible. Penetration limits are conservative and explicit, commonly expressed as a maximum combined depth and distance from the surface, and some agencies teach external survey only at this level. Standards vary by agency and region, and nothing at this level qualifies anyone for deep interior exploration - that is technical wreck training, with redundant gas and different rules.

Prerequisites are an advanced-level certification with most agencies and a minimum age commonly 15. Because many of the world's storied wrecks sit in the 20-35 m band, the deep specialty and enriched air pair naturally with this one, and instructors often sequence them into a single trip. Expect to pay roughly US$250-500 depending on region and boat logistics, with lights, reels, and sometimes a second cylinder included or rentable.

The course also carries diving's etiquette where it matters most. Many wrecks are war graves or casualty sites: people died in them, families remember, and several countries protect such sites in law. Training teaches the conventions - take nothing, touch respectfully, treat human remains and personal effects as off-limits absolutely, and know the local rules before you splash, because artifact removal is a crime in much of the world and has already stripped famous wrecks bare. A wreck diver who surfaces with a souvenir has failed the course's central lesson.

Who should take it? Anyone whose travel list includes the classics - the Red Sea's freighters, the Pacific's war fleets, the purpose-sunk ships of the Caribbean - and anyone who has hung at the edge of a hull opening and felt both the pull and the caution. The specialty gives that instinct structure: enough skill to enjoy the world's wrecks closely, and enough knowledge to know exactly where your training ends. For divers who want what lies past the light zone, the honest route runs through technical training, not bravado.
