The Bahamas built its diving reputation on sharks, and it remains the most reliable place in the Atlantic to see them at close range. Tiger Beach, a shallow sandbank off Grand Bahama, draws tiger sharks, lemon sharks, and nurse sharks over white sand in ginlike visibility, while Nassau's operators have run organized Caribbean reef shark feeds for decades. Beyond the sharks, the archipelago's 700 islands sit on carbonate banks cut with walls, blue holes, and swim-throughs, with wrecks scattered off New Providence, several of them placed for film shoots. The water is warm most of the year, flights from the US East Coast are short, and the diving industry is mature. It is not a budget destination, but for big-animal encounters within two hours of Florida, nothing else compares.

Tiger Beach and Grand Bahama form the marquee region: liveaboards and day boats work the shallow banks west of Grand Bahama for tiger and lemon sharks, with reef and wreck diving off Freeport. Nassau and New Providence offer the classic Bahamas mix, Caribbean reef shark dives on the southwest side, the Tongue of the Ocean wall, and movie wrecks in the shallows. The Out Islands beyond the registry's scope add walls and blue holes for those with more time.

Esperienze distintive: Kneeling on sand at Tiger Beach while tiger sharks cruise an arm's length away; the choreographed reef shark dives off Nassau; wall diving on the Tongue of the Ocean; wreck sets used in Bond films; dolphin encounters off Grand Bahama.

Stagioni: Diving runs year-round, but the November-to-April stretch pairs the most reliable tiger shark action at Tiger Beach with dry, settled weather. Summer brings warmer water and calmer seas early on, then rising hurricane risk from June through November. Winter cold fronts can blow out exposed sites for a day or two.

Come arrivare: Nassau (NAS) is a short flight from Florida and the US East Coast with wide international connections; Grand Bahama (FPO) is served from Florida. Many Tiger Beach trips are liveaboards departing from Palm Beach or Fort Lauderdale, Florida, or from West End, Grand Bahama.

Entrata e visti: Citizens of the US, Canada, the UK, the EU, and many other countries generally enter visa-free as tourists with a passport and onward ticket. Verify current requirements for your nationality before travel.

Quanto costano le immersioni: Two-tank boat dives around Nassau and Freeport run roughly USD 120-180, dedicated shark-feed dives somewhat more, and Tiger Beach liveaboards typically USD 3,000-4,500 for a week.

Lingua: English is the official language throughout the islands.

Mance: Tipping culture follows the US pattern: 15 percent is standard in restaurants (sometimes added automatically), and dive crews are customarily tipped around 10-15 percent of the dive bill or a few dollars per tank.

Sicurezza in viaggio: The dive industry is professional and the Out Islands are relaxed, but parts of Nassau carry elevated crime levels and several governments have issued advisories about the capital; use normal city precautions, stick to reputable operators, and avoid displaying valuables. Hurricane season, June through November, is the other planning factor. Shark feeds are well run here, but follow briefings exactly.

Copertura per ricompressione: Hyperbaric facilities have operated in Nassau, and serious dive injuries are frequently evacuated to Florida, which is minutes away by air ambulance. Availability changes; confirm current arrangements with your operator, and in an emergency work through local EMS and DAN.

Strutture iperbariche (riferimento per la pianificazione) Bahamas Hyperbaric Centre, Nassau. La disponibilità può cambiare — in caso di emergenza chiama prima il pronto soccorso locale e DAN (+1-919-684-9111). Directory completa →
